Grant Wilson Leads No. 4 Indiana to Overtime Victory Over Minnesota

No. 4 Indiana Outlasts Minnesota 23-16 in Overtime Thriller

No. 4 Indiana narrowly avoided a devastating second loss of the season on Saturday, defeating Minnesota 23-16 in overtime in Bloomington, Indiana. Backup quarterback Grant Wilson stepped in during the second half, helping the Hoosiers secure a victory as they attempt to repeat as national champions.

Indiana sits at 8-1 overall and 5-1 in Big Ten play after the hard-fought victory. The game appeared entirely out of reach when Minnesota’s Luke Drzewiecki drilled a career-long 60-yard field goal with just 19 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Golden Gophers a 16-13 advantage.

Late-Game Heroics and Record-Setting Kicks

With precious seconds ticking away, Indiana answered immediately. A 33-yard reception by Becker on the next play from scrimmage set up Paddy McAteer, who launched a career-long 60-yard field goal of his own as time expired to force overtime.

That sequence marked the second season in Big Ten history that multiple field goals of 60 or more yards were made — and it happened in the same game. For Minnesota (5-3, 3-2), it represented a heartbreak after leading the majority of the matchup on the road and national television. The Golden Gophers dropped to 0-13 against defending national champions.

“They made some big-time plays, and we did everything we could to put ourselves in position to win,” Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said. “But our kids never blink, never back down. We expected to win this game. That’s a hurt locker room in there.”

Quarterback Shakeup and Overtime Execution

Indiana coach Curt Cignetti made a decisive pivot at halftime, benching struggling starting quarterback Josh Hoover after he took a hard hit on his second interception of the season. Hoover finished the first half 8 of 19 for 119 yards with one touchdown and one pick.

Enter Grant Wilson, a seventh-year player in whom Cignetti maintained confidence. Wilson engineered the comeback, completing 9 of 17 passes for 156 yards and a score. On the very first play of overtime, Wilson delivered a 25-yard touchdown pass. Becker capped off a stellar afternoon with eight catches for 149 yards and that decisive score.

Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey went 20 of 37 for 120 yards and one touchdown, while Javon Tracy pulled down seven receptions for 40 yards. Two late replay reviews also heavily impacted regulation play: one overturned a potential go-ahead Indiana touchdown pass, while another erased an interception that would have given Indiana possession deep in Minnesota territory with 2:59 left on the clock.

The Hoosier defense ultimately slammed the door in overtime by sacking Lindsey on fourth down. “This is entertainment, so I thought we’d bring some entertainment to this game,” Cignetti joked after the win. “Minnesota played great and we just made some plays, but this team just finds a way (to win).”
