Idaho Falls Plans Safety Improvements for 15th East and 49th South Intersection

The intersection of 15th East and 49th South in Idaho Falls is slated for a significant safety overhaul following a period marked by frequent traffic incidents. According to a report from idahofallsidaho.gov, local officials are moving forward with a series of infrastructure upgrades designed to mitigate collision risks and accommodate the growing traffic demands of southern Idaho Falls.

The proposed project aims to transform the current layout of the intersection through several key physical changes. These improvements include the installation of new traffic signals, the addition of dedicated left turn lanes, and the implementation of streetlights to improve nighttime visibility. To better protect those traveling on foot, the plan also calls for new pedestrian ramps and crosswalks.

Safety upgrades respond to a history of crashes

The impetus for these changes is rooted in recent accident data. Between 2018 and 2022, this specific intersection saw a total of 26 crashes. This frequency of incidents has prompted the City of Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, and the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC) to seek a solution through a federal grant specifically earmarked to address safety concerns at this location.

Beyond immediate accident prevention, city planners are looking at the broader trajectory of local development. As southern Idaho Falls continues to expand, the volume of vehicles passing through 15th East and 49th South is expected to rise. Officials believe these upgrades are necessary to ensure the intersection remains both safe and efficient as the area becomes more densely populated.

The timeline for these changes spans the next several years. While the community is being asked to weigh in on the designs now, the actual construction is not expected to begin until late 2027 or early 2028. Finalized design plans are currently anticipated for release in early 2027.

Public input period opens for community feedback

Local residents and commuters have a direct window to influence how these safety measures are implemented. An open house is scheduled for Nov. 5 at the Bonneville County Fairgrounds Carriage House, located at 1542 E 73rd S, Idaho Falls. This event allows community members to drop in any time between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. to review the proposed designs and provide direct feedback to the agencies involved.

For those unable to attend the in-person session, there are digital avenues for participation. Residents can obtain project information by emailing the city or by submitting their specific comments through a digital portal at https://arcg.is/LGDvC. The window for formal public comment remains open through Nov. 20.

The scale of the project reflects a larger trend in municipal planning where federal funding is increasingly leveraged to address localized “hot spots” of vehicular accidents. By addressing the intersection now, the city and LHTAC hope to stay ahead of the congestion that typically follows rapid suburban growth.
