Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute is welcoming back one of its own on Friday, Nov. 6, offering students and local residents a direct line to Springfield just days after the fall ballot boxes close.
Springfield Returns to Carbondale
Illinois state Rep. Will Davis, a Democrat from Homewood and a 1989 political science graduate of the university, will headline an open house event at the institute’s facility inside the Forestry Building at 1231 Lincoln Drive. The gathering runs from noon to 1:30 p.m., bringing together campus staff, community members, and public policy advocates.
For voters and regional stakeholders across southern Illinois, the timing places policy discussions front and center. Davis arrives on campus with a full legislative slate waiting for him in the capital.
Post-Election Realities and Veto Priorities
During the Friday afternoon session, Davis plans to unpack the fallout from the Nov. 3 election results, lay out the upcoming priorities for the legislature’s veto session, and field direct questions from the audience. Organizers note that discussions will also drill down into school funding reforms and state budget accountability.
Linda R. Baker, the interim director of the institute, emphasized the value of bringing practicing lawmakers face-to-face with the university community.
“Rep. Davis has dedicated his career to public service and addressing issues that affect communities across Illinois,” Baker said. “We’re pleased to welcome him back to campus as a fellow Saluki and provide an opportunity for our community to hear his perspective on the recent election, the state’s upcoming legislative session and important questions surrounding education funding and responsible budgeting.”
Education Finance
Davis has represented the 30th district in the Illinois House of Representatives since voters first elected him in 2003. His district spans parts of Chicago alongside several southern and south-suburban municipalities and townships in Cook County. He has carved out a distinct niche around public education finance.
As chairman of the House Appropriations–Elementary and Secondary Education Committee, Davis served as the chief House sponsor of Senate Bill 1947, which established Illinois’ Evidence-Based Funding model for public schools. He also acts as a founding member of the Better Funding for Better Schools Coalition and belongs to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Public Access and Continuing Civic Mission
The open house is free and open to the public, with refreshments served. While registration is encouraged by institute organizers, it is not mandatory to attend.
Beyond the immediate legislative calendar, the event serves to highlight the ongoing civic mission of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. The institute works to foster ethical conduct in government and deepen public engagement with complex policy challenges.
