The top-seeded Ankeny Christian Eagles and the third-seeded Janesville Wildcats face off at Extreme Arena in downtown Coralville for the Class 1A Iowa high school state volleyball championship, Iowa PBS reported on November 5, 2026.
Iowa PBS provided coverage for the final title match of the day at Extreme Arena. The state tournament brought together two dominant programs with very different styles of play. Ankeny Christian entered the matchup as the top seed, boasting a school-record 35 regular season wins and a history of state tournament success, having claimed titles from 2022 to 2024 before taking a year off.
Janesville arrived at the championship match making its 15th trip to state after finishing as runners-up a year previous. The Wildcats featured a potent offensive attack anchored by super sophomore Quinn Sweeney, who stood at six-foot-four and entered the match with over 500 kills on the season, alongside senior setter and four-year starter Tayah Pollock.
Establishing the Middle Attack in Coralville
The championship match opened with officials Joe Van Ness and Karl Wooldridge managing the floor, alongside line judges Jean Stadtlander and Morris Frazier. Public address announcer Tim Fitzpatrick introduced the lineups before the opening serve.
Janesville looked to establish its middle hitters early, leaning on Sweeney and Lauren Meaney to pressure the Ankeny Christian defense. Ankeny Christian countered with aggressive serving and outside hitting from players like Havana Dolbeare and freshman setter Gabby Quick, who handled offensive distribution for the Eagles.
The early exchanges favored the Wildcats as Janesville jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set. Michele Quick called an early timeout for Ankeny Christian to regroup as the Eagles worked to contain Sweeney’s trajectory at the net.
A Day of State Championships Across Classes

Ankeny Christian reached the title match through a rigorous schedule that included winning five weekend tournaments and putting together a 27-match winning streak during the regular season. Their schedule featured competition against larger schools, including matches against Aplington-Parkersburg and Grundy Center.
As the first set progressed, Janesville maintained its early advantage by keeping the ball in system and utilizing their height advantage at the net, while Ankeny Christian fought to adjust their block and generate attack opportunities from the outside pins.
