JANUARY Launches Scignal Running Shoe With New KineXion Foam Technology

JANUARY, a new performance running brand founded by BIPOC runners, has launched with its debut shoe, Scignal. Priced at $195, the model features a proprietary supercritical TPEE foam midsole designed for a responsive, natural ride without the bulk of traditional max-stack footwear. Retail availability begins in August 2026.

Engineering a New Approach to Daily Running

Shop Eat Surf Outdoor, a new global brand founded by male and female BIPOC runners, is positioning its debut model, Scignal, as a direct challenge to that trend. By focusing on a lower, more natural stack height, the company aims to offer a lighter, smarter, more human alternative for everyday runners.

Engineering a New Approach to Daily Running

At the center of this design philosophy is the proprietary KineXion™ technology. Unlike conventional foams that require significant thickness to prevent the shoe from feeling harsh, this supercritical aerospace-grade TPEE foam is engineered to compress more softly and rebound faster. The result is a single-piece dual-density midsole that remains plush at the heel while firming up toward the forefoot, providing stability without the need for additional volume.

Wei-En Chang and the Vision for JANUARY

The brand is led by founder and CEO Wei-En Chang, who brings over three decades of footwear development experience to the project. The company’s name holds specific personal resonance for Chang, as both he and his father were born in January, a month he characterizes as the time of renewal and new beginnings, when life is at its fullest potential.

“Unlocking every runner’s maximum potential is my goal, by designing and delivering products with high performance and style.”

Alongside Chang, Cheryln Quan-Read serves as the brand’s creative director. Together, they have built a women’s-first fit framework into the Scignal, aiming to make the shoe accessible across a diverse range of runner profiles. The brand emphasizes that it is designed for everyone from long-distance trainers to working professionals balancing mileage with daily life.

Technical Specifications and Design Choices

Beyond the midsole, JANUARY has made deliberate choices regarding the structural integrity of the Scignal. Most notably, the shoe omits a carbon plate. While such plates are common in elite racing shoes, the company notes that they can increase injury risks for broader populations. Instead, the Scignal utilizes a nylon shank, which provides the necessary torsional stability and structural support to complement the soft foam.
