Mississippi State Prepares to Face Texas as Jeff Lebby Seeks to Break SEC Slump

“Our guys feel the sense of urgency to go and start fast, and they are excited about the opportunity,” Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby said in August, outlining a mission to rewrite the trajectory of his program after two losing seasons to open his tenure as the Bulldogs’ head coach.

Coming into year three, Lebby finds himself facing intense scrutiny after compiling a 1-15 record in Southeastern Conference matchups. To counter those persistent conference struggles, the Bulldogs prioritized building an explosive non-conference schedule around returning foundational players and revamped recruiting. That strategy initially paid off with a 4-0 start featuring wins over Louisiana-Monroe, Minnesota, South Carolina, and then-No. 19 Missouri, carrying Mississippi State as high as No. 16 in the AP Poll while scoring at least 31 points in each victory.

Yet, the momentum has encountered a severe roadblock. Three consecutive losses and a season-ending injury to star sophomore quarterback Kamario Taylor have forced Lebby to radically adjust his offensive approach as the team travels to Austin to face Texas this Saturday.

Without Taylor available under center, Lebby must generate production through alternative avenues against a formidable Texas squad led by senior quarterback Arch Manning. Lebby plans to anchor his offense in the ground game, leaning heavily on junior running back Fluff Bothwell to shoulder the load while the quarterback room stabilizes.

On the other side of the trenches, Mississippi State’s defense faces immense pressure. The unit currently ranks 14th and 16th out of 16 SEC teams in yards and points allowed per game, respectively, with three of their seven opponents eclipsing the 30-point mark.

Despite those struggles, the defense showed flashes in their first two games of the season, along with an improved performance against Oklahoma last week. That variation has caught the attention of the Longhorns.

“They do a lot, variety of defense,” Manning said on Monday regarding the upcoming matchup. “They fly the ball, play hard, so we’re excited for the challenge.”

Looking Ahead in the SEC Schedule

Lebby brings deep personal ties to the Lone Star State. Born in McGregor, Texas, and raised in Andrews, Texas—where he attended Andrews High School—he crossed the Red River to attend Oklahoma before launching his coaching career at Memorial High School in Victoria, Texas, followed by a multi-season stint on Baylor’s staff.

Those roots make this weekend’s clash in Austin a homecoming of sorts, but the professional stakes remain entirely centered on conference survival. Having previously built a strong reputation by going 31-18 across four seasons as offensive coordinator at Ole Miss and Oklahoma, Lebby understands the urgency required to translate early-season flashes into four quarters of SEC execution.

Sitting at 4-3 overall, Mississippi State enters a punishing stretch of conference play that will determine whether early progress becomes sustainable stability or merely another false dawn for the program.

“This year is this year,” Lebby said during a Monday media availability. “Again, for us, it’s about being the best we’ve been all year on Saturday night at 6:30.”
