Steve Sarkisian Tells Arch Manning to Balance Aggression, Discretion

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has told quarterback Arch Manning to balance aggression with discretion following a series of turnovers, according to Inside Texas on X.

The Turnover Problem Behind the Mandate

The Longhorns recently secured a hard-fought 34-27 victory against Ole Miss, offering some breathing room after back-to-back defeats against Oklahoma and Florida. Yet that win did little to erase mounting concerns under center. Across recent weeks, Manning’s aggressive style has repeatedly put the offense in precarious positions. Against Oklahoma, he threw two interceptions that the Sooners quickly converted into decisive scoring opportunities.

The struggles compounded the following week against unranked Florida. Manning was sacked and fumbled at the Texas 48-yard line, losing nine yards and setting up a short field for the Gators. Though he finished the Ole Miss matchup with 212 passing yards and a touchdown, the performance remained far from clean, featuring two more interceptions and another fumble. According to Yahoo Sports, Sarkisian likes his quarterback’s fearless approach with both his arm and his legs, but insists that maintaining possession requires a stricter internal clock.

“I do think he’s at his best when he’s aggressive throwing the ball. I do think he’s at his best when he’s aggressive using his legs. And so I want him to remain aggressive, but at the same time have a little discretion, obviously as it pertains to the ball,” Sarkisian explained, via Inside Texas on X.

Evaluating the Offense Amid Rising Stakes

The margin for error in Austin has vanished entirely. Sitting dangerously close to falling out of the College Football Playoff race, Texas has endured offensive stretches that left coaching staff searching for answers. EssentiallySports reported that when pressed about Manning’s future following the Florida loss, Sarkisian admitted that everything is on the table during a rigorous night of evaluations.

“We’re not playing good offensive football right now, so everything is going to be evaluated,” Sarkisian said after the Florida defeat.

Against Florida, Texas raced to a 17-3 lead before the offense practically vanished in the third quarter, managing just eight yards during a frame where the Gators seized complete control. Manning completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards, marking his fourth game in the last five outings failing to surpass the 250-yard passing mark. Despite a brilliant 62-yard completion to Emmett Mosley V on fourth down that set up a touchdown to Cam Coleman, another late-game fumble—forced by Florida linebacker Myles Graham and recovered by Kanye Clark—sealed the 27-24 upset.

Preparing for Mississippi State and Defensive Realities

Next up for the Longhorns is a matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. While the Bulldogs will be without starting quarterback Kamario Taylor, Manning acknowledged to reporters that Mississippi State presents the fastest defense Texas has faced all season.

Mississippi State features a run defense ranked inside the top 50 nationally, while their secondary sits outside the top 120. Establishing a reliable ground game figures to dictate whether the Longhorns can control the tempo. Meanwhile, Texas defensive philosophy stands to benefit from the influence of Will Muschamp. Sarkisian noted that Muschamp’s defensive calling card eliminates easy completions, making it significantly harder for opponents to move the football.

“If you look back at us historically, defensively, I felt like we were giving up too much of easy completions and freebies,” Sarkisian said regarding Muschamp’s impact. “And knowing Will and studying Will from afar, that is one of the calling cards of his defenses is making sure that there are no gimmies. It’s not easy.”

Whether Parker Puckett starts or Jeff Lebby turns to veteran quarterback AJ Swann, the Bulldogs will test a Texas squad whose playoff aspirations hang in the immediate balance.
