Texas football: Star QB Kamario Taylor out for Mississippi State – Austin American-Statesman

Mississippi State Loses Star Quarterback Kamario Taylor for the Rest of the Season

Mississippi State will play the remainder of the season without star sophomore quarterback Kamario Taylor, who needs surgery to repair ligament damage in his right toe. Head coach Jeff Lebby announced the definitive roster change on Tuesday following a rigorous opening stretch in SEC play.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback from Macon, Mississippi, initially burst onto the national scene during the first month of the season, throwing for 1,450 yards and 17 touchdowns through five weeks. That early-season tear thrust him directly into the Heisman Trophy conversation while powering the Bulldogs into the national rankings. However, the physical toll mounted quickly. Taylor missed the October 17 game against LSU with a right foot or ankle injury before returning to the field, only to reaggravate the issue early in last week’s hard-fought loss to Oklahoma.

The offensive drop-off without Taylor on the field has been stark. With him running the offense, Mississippi State averaged 48.8 points per game, splitting a pair of contests against ranked SEC opponents Missouri and Alabama. Sidelined without their primary playmaker, the Bulldogs managed just 291 total yards in a 31-0 shutout loss at LSU and 352 yards in a 23-15 home defeat against the Sooners.

Managing High-Speed Offense Without the Starter

Lebby confirmed that Billy Puckett and Appalachian State transfer AJ Swann will both split practice repetitions with the first team moving forward. Puckett shouldered the load after Taylor’s exit against Oklahoma, guiding the offense through the final three quarters while completing 17 of 24 passes for 158 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, alongside 37 rushing yards and a lost fumble.

Even with a new face behind center, upcoming opponents are preparing for the same blistering pace. No. 11 Texas travels to face Mississippi State at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium, where Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian expects the Bulldogs to maintain their frantic snap rate. Last season, Mississippi State piled up 445 total yards across 86 snaps in a 45-38 overtime loss to Texas.

“I think the first thing with Mississippi State (is) they play really fast,” Steve Sarkisian said. “I think they snap the ball with an average of 27 seconds still left on the shot clock. That’s how fast they want to snap the ball. They spread you wide with their splits, and they play fast on the perimeter, and I felt like that hurt us last year in the game at their place.”

Defensive Adjustments and SEC Tempo

Mississippi State currently ranks eighth nationally in offensive tempo, averaging a snap every 23.0 seconds. The SEC poses unique challenges in this regard, with Ole Miss ranking sixth nationally at 22.6 seconds per play and Auburn holding the conference’s fastest pace with a snap every 21.7 seconds.

Texas defensive tackle Hero Kanu emphasized the speed on the perimeter and the use of spread and open formations and vertical routes by Mississippi State. The Longhorns defense enters the matchup leading the SEC in total yards allowed during conference play, giving up just 283.8 yards per game, and recently handled a fast-paced Ole Miss offense in a 31-24 win.

Whether Puckett or Swann earns the starting nod for Saturday night’s matchup in Austin, the challenge for Mississippi State remains clear as they attempt to recapture their early-season rhythm without their most dynamic offensive weapon.
