The University of Cincinnati volleyball team dug out of a two-set deficit to force a decisive fifth frame Friday night, but 20 service errors proved too heavy a burden in a 3-2 loss to Kansas State at Morgan Family Arena.
Statistical Advantage Undone by Service Faults
Set scores favored the Wildcats 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 17-25, 15-10, dropping the Bearcats to 11-10 overall and 4-7 in Big 12 play. Despite controlling major statistical categories—outhitting the hosts .236 to .163 and holding edges in blocks at 7.0 to 5.0, digs at 73 to 70, and aces at 8 to 7—Cincinnati was undone by 20 service errors compared to nine for Kansas State.
Standout Performances on Both Sides
Sydney Nolan powered the Cincinnati attack with 21 kills on a .340 hitting percentage. Ligia Williams contributed 10 kills and three blocks, while Nina Scrucca chipped in eight kills and two aces. Setting duties were split between Andi Spies with 24 assists and Kate Lijic with 17, anchored defensively by libero Viktoria Ninova’s 32 digs and 13 digs from Ava Ledebuhr. Kansas State countered with 21 kills from Addison Massey and 13 from Skylar Brady.
A Tale of Early Struggles and Dominant Rallies
The opening frame set a challenging tone when Cincinnati fell behind early and never led after a 1-1 tie, dropping the set 25-19. The second set offered a stark reversal of fortune before ending in heartbreak. The Bearcats built leads as large as six points, sitting comfortably ahead at 18-12 and later 22-17. Yet Kansas State stormed back with an eight-point run, capitalizing on five Cincinnati errors to steal the set 25-22.

Staring down a sweep, Cincinnati dominated the third and fourth frames. The Bearcats commanded the third set from the opening whistle, racing to a 6-0 lead and closing out a 25-17 win behind a .353 team hitting percentage and a strong service run from Scrucca. They maintained that momentum in the fourth, holding Kansas State to a meager .030 hitting percentage while cruising to another 25-17 victory, capped by Andrea Simovski’s consecutive aces and Nolan’s fifth kill of the set.
Decisive Fifth Frame and Ahead to Lawrence
The fifth set swung back and forth through five ties and three lead changes. Cincinnati claimed early edges at 1-0 and 4-3, but Kansas State responded by seizing eight of the next eleven points. Back-to-back aces by Emerson Van Lannen pushed the Wildcats ahead 10-7, and a late surge sealed the match 15-10 on a final Cincinnati service error.
