Bismarck State Locked into Seventh Seed After Helena Loss

The Bismarck State College volleyball team’s road trip to Helena ended with a 3-0 loss to Carroll College on Thursday night, a result that officially cements the Mystics as the seventh seed heading into next week’s Frontier Conference Tournament. While the team had already secured a postseason berth, the final set scores—25-23, 25-18, and 26-24—illustrate a night of narrow margins and lost opportunities for the visitors.

According to the official Bismarck State Athletics report, the loss brings the Mystics to a 12-14 overall record, including a 10-11 standing in conference play. For Carroll, the victory improves their season to 18-10 overall and 13-8 within the conference. The result also serves as a split for the season series, as both teams successfully defended their home courts throughout the year.

High-Stakes Sequences Define the Night

The match was defined by its volatility, featuring 11 ties and seven lead changes. The opening set saw Bismarck State build an early 6-2 lead, only to surrender six consecutive points to the Fighting Saints. A late-set surge from the Mystics—fueled by kills from Ellie Baumstarck—briefly tied the score at 21-21, but Carroll managed to close out the set by two points. The efficiency gap was narrow, with the Mystics hitting .163 compared to Carroll’s .195.

The second set proved to be the most decisive, as Carroll maintained control for the majority of the frame. The Mystics struggled to find rhythm, hitting .000 in the set with eight kills matched by eight errors. The final set offered the most dramatic turnaround of the evening. Trailing 17-11, the Mystics mounted a comeback behind the serving of Aubrey Flynn, who delivered seven straight points and two aces to pull ahead 19-17. Bismarck State eventually reached set point at 24-21, but Carroll responded by claiming the final five points to complete the sweep.

Reese Duchsherer Anchors Offense and Defense with Stellar Statistics

Despite the team result, individual efforts kept the Mystics competitive throughout the match. Reese Duchsherer anchored the offense and defense, recording 12 kills and 11 digs to secure her 15th double-double of the season. Her 12.5 points led the team alongside Ellie Baumstarck, who hit .333 with nine kills and six blocks.

The distribution of the offense fell to Aspen Roaldson, who finished with 32 assists and two aces. Defensively, Piper Harris led the effort with 16 digs. While the Mystics managed to match Carroll in service aces—each team finished with six—the Fighting Saints held a slight edge in both blocking (9.0 to 8.0) and total digs (65 to 61). As a team, Bismarck State hit .117, unable to overcome Carroll’s .213 hitting percentage.

Tournament Outlook and the Final Regular Season Match

This seventh-place finish marks a significant improvement for the program, which concluded last season in 11th place. The team now turns its attention to the regular-season finale in Billings, Montana, where they face Rocky Mountain College on Friday, November 6, at 7 p.m. CT.

Following that match, the Mystics will travel back to Helena for the Frontier Conference Tournament quarterfinals, scheduled for November 12. Their opponent remains dependent on the results of the final conference matches. If Montana Tech wins at least one of their remaining two contests, they will likely finish as the second seed and face Bismarck State. Alternatively, if the Orediggers lose both matches and Dakota State defeats Valley City State, the Trojans could move into that second-seed position.

For a team that has struggled on the road this season, currently sitting at 2-8 in away matches, the upcoming tournament represents a fresh start. The transition from the regular season to a single-elimination tournament format often shifts the focus from cumulative records to tactical adjustments. With the seventh seed now locked, the Mystics are effectively playing for momentum, aiming to carry the lessons from their narrow losses in Helena into their first postseason appearance of the year.
