The Master’s University Falls in Overtime to Southern Oregon

The Master’s University men’s basketball team dropped a difficult 82-76 overtime decision to Southern Oregon on Saturday night at Danny Miles Court, bringing the Mustangs’ season record to 1-4. According to the official report from The Master’s University Athletics, the game was a contest of stark statistical contrasts, with the Mustangs outperforming the Raiders in field goal percentage and paint scoring, only to be undone by a disparity at the free-throw line and on the boards.

Kelson Gebbers led the effort for The Master’s University, playing all 40 minutes of the contest. Gebbers finished with 29 points, shooting 12-of-16 from the field and connecting on 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, while also contributing seven rebounds. Despite this offensive output, the Mustangs struggled to contain the Raiders’ second-half momentum.

Statistical Disparities Define the Loss

The game data reveals why the Mustangs could not secure the win despite leading by seven points with just 3:25 remaining in regulation. While The Master’s University shot 46.2 percent from the floor compared to Southern Oregon’s 41.7 percent, the Raiders found their edge through discipline and physical play.

Statistic The Master’s University Southern Oregon
Field Goal Percentage 46.2% 41.7%
Free Throws Made-Attempted 1-3 17-25
Rebounds 30 42
Points in the Paint 24 18

The most significant factor in the outcome was the free-throw discrepancy. The Mustangs attempted only three free throws throughout the entire game, whereas Southern Oregon capitalized on 17 of their 25 attempts. Furthermore, the Raiders dominated the glass, outrebounding the Mustangs 42-30. This advantage led to a 16-5 edge for Southern Oregon in second-chance points, providing the extra possessions necessary to force the game into the extra period.

The Shift in Overtime

After a competitive first half that saw Southern Oregon hold a 36-31 lead, the Mustangs returned from the locker room with high energy. They shot 53.6 percent from the field and 7-of-14 from deep during the second half. However, that rhythm vanished once the game hit overtime.

In the final period, the Mustangs’ shooting went cold, as they managed only 3-of-10 from the field and missed all six of their three-point attempts. Southern Oregon capitalized on this drought, outscoring the Mustangs 12-6 in overtime to secure the victory.

Brayden Miner provided a spark off the bench for the Mustangs, contributing 16 points and four three-pointers. Jayceon Smith, Quincy Phillips, and Rylan Starr each added nine points, with all of Starr’s points coming from beyond the arc. Caden DeVries played a pivotal role in ball security, running the offense for 37 minutes while recording six assists with zero turnovers.

For Southern Oregon, Luke Wagstaff was a key contributor off the bench, scoring 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Jace Anderson added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Isaiah Bronson chipped in 13 points.

The Mustangs now look ahead to their next challenge, as they prepare to face Bushnell University on November 12 at 7:00 p.m.
