Kentucky Secures Crucial Home Finale Win Against Georgia Southern
The Kentucky Wildcats closed out their home slate for the 2026 season with a 1-0 shutout win over the Georgia Southern Eagles at the Bell Soccer Complex. The victory lifts the Wildcats into seventh place in the Sun Belt Conference with eight points, securing a vital three points as the regular season draws to a close.
Playing on Senior Night and Alumni Night, Kentucky entered the fixture needing a positive result to strengthen their postseason positioning. Kentucky entered the match with an overall record of 1-9-4 and a 1-4-2 conference mark, while the Eagles arrived with a 6-4-4 record overall and 2-3-2 in league play, featuring leading scorer Broden Beorlegui and his eight goals.
Offensive production was scarce in the opening stages. The deadlock broke in the 27th minute when UK freshman midfielder Ari Saliu capitalized on an unforced error by the Eagles, slotting home a goal off an assist from Bains Smith. That effort stood as the only shot on target for either side during the entire first 45 minutes.
Defensive Grit and Second-Half Pressure
Kentucky maintained the pressure after the interval. Just under 20 minutes into the second half, a through ball sent Smith inside the 18-yard box produced another scoring opportunity, but Georgia Southern goalkeeper Luca Maxim matched the attempt. Forward Costa Iliadis tracked the rebound for a follow-up shot but could not convert.
Two minutes later, Iliadis tested Maxim again from a nearly identical position, forcing the goalkeeper into his second save of the night to keep the score 1-0. The final 20 minutes devolved into a physical, defensive contest. Despite an even 53% to 47% possession split, Kentucky outshot Georgia Southern 15-5, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Wildcat goalkeeper Benjamin Rasmussen recorded one save on the night, anchoring a defense that secured their second clean sheet of the season, as well as their second in as many games. Rasmussen entered the match with 48 saves, ranking second-most in the Sun Belt.
The Road Ahead
With the home schedule concluded, the Wildcats turn their attention to the regular season finale. Kentucky will travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to face the Georgia State Panthers on November 3 at 7 p.m. ET. The conference tournament is scheduled to begin on November 8.
