Kentucky Officials Urge Parents to Check Child Safety Seat Requirements

Kentucky Officials Issue Roadway Reminder on Child Safety Seat Requirements

Team Kentucky has joined other states across the nation to urge drivers traveling with children to inspect their car seats for proper height and weight specifications. The announcement arrives as state leaders spotlight the ongoing necessity of correctly installed restraints to prevent severe injuries on local roadways.

Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 13. Research published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals a stark vulnerability: in 39 percent of child fatalities recorded during 2024, the young victims were unrestrained.

Properly utilized car seats alter those outcomes dramatically. According to federal data, safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury in passenger cars by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers aged 1 to 4. For light trucks, the protective margin shifts to a 58 percent reduction for infants and a 59 percent reduction for toddlers.

State Leadership Emphasizes Prevention and Inspection Resources

State officials emphasize that hardware alone is not enough; correct fitting and continuous monitoring as children grow are vital to maintaining protection.

“Safety should always be the priority on the road, especially when it comes to our kids,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “Knowing your child seat’s height and weight limits and making sure children are secured can make all the difference in keeping them safe.”

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet points out that assistance is widely available for caregivers seeking certainty about whether their equipment matches a child’s current developmental stage.

“Prevention is key to ensuring our kids are kept safe,” said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman. “Safety resources and experts are readily available to help caregivers have the peace of mind that their child’s seat is age-appropriate and installed correctly.”

Free Checkup Events Help Families Verify Seat Installation

To help families solve installation challenges, free checkup events are scheduled at various locations throughout the year. These sessions allow caregivers to work alongside certified professionals to verify that seats match specific vehicle and child requirements.

The state’s ongoing outreach builds on initiatives from Child Passenger Safety Week, which ran from September 20 through September 26, 2026. Drivers seeking schedules for local checkup events, guidance on choosing appropriate gear, or information regarding Kentucky’s specific child passenger safety laws can visit the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety’s Child Passenger Safety webpage. Additional equipment guidance and installation standards are maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
