Reno Court Documents Detail Sutro Street Murder Aftermath
On a Tuesday night in late October, Reno’s streets saw a fatal altercation that left a 27-year-old man dead and a 44-year-old man facing murder charges, according to court documents reviewed by KOLO. The incident, which began with a verbal argument, ended with gunshots at the intersection of 6th and Sutro Streets, a tragedy now laid bare in official records.
The Reno Police Department’s investigation, based on a witness account and physical evidence, shed light on events that led to an arrest.
The Night of the Shooting
The timeline provided by law enforcement begins around 10:00 p.m. when a Reno Police officer received a call from a sergeant reporting a murder at the 6th and Sutro intersection. The source of that information was a security guard at the nearby Diamonds Casino. The guard, on a break at the northeast end of the building, reported hearing a heated verbal argument between two men. He then watched as one of the men, in a sedan, pulled onto Sutro Street, exited his vehicle, and squared up with the other man.
As the guard turned to return to his post, he heard two gunshots. He did not see the actual shooting. Upon hearing the shots, he turned back and saw the sedan leaving the scene, heading north on Sutro. KOLO reported that the footage clearly showed a man getting out of his car, extending his arm in a manner consistent with pointing a handgun, and firing. The other man was seen falling to the ground before the alleged shooter got back into his car and fled.
Within 20 minutes, police located the suspect’s vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, near the intersection of Sutro and 6th Streets. It was unoccupied and immediately seized as evidence.
Suspect Stops After Pursuit
On October 27, Reno Police located the suspect, 44-year-old Edgar Campos-Garcia, driving a different vehicle in the Sparks area, near McCarran and East Nugget. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Garcia reportedly failed to comply, leading to a pursuit. The chase ended when police successfully stopped him, but the confrontation was not over. Garcia allegedly refused to exit his car, telling police he was armed.
After a period of negotiation, officers convinced Garcia to leave the vehicle, and he was taken into custody. Inside the car, police found two sets of keys: one for the Corolla seized at the scene and another for the Honda Garcia was driving at the time of his arrest.
When she did not answer the door, he claimed he went home and went to sleep, insisting he did not hear police calling for him to come outside.
Police obtained a search warrant for his home, where they found footwear they believe matches the description of the alleged shooter. They also located a handgun inside the Honda Garcia was driving when he was arrested.
“Homicide investigations are built on a foundation of meticulous evidence collection and witness corroboration. The timeline here, from the initial call to the arrest, shows a methodical approach to piecing together a complex case,” said a retired law enforcement analyst familiar with Reno criminal investigations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the case.
Where the Case Stands Now
Edgar Campos-Garcia now faces open murder charges.
The intersection of 6th and Sutro is now the site of a violent death.
The legal process is just beginning. Garcia has the right to a fair trial, and prosecutors will bear the burden of proving his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
