KSHSAA Moves Boys Soccer State Championships to Topeka After Crash

KSHSAA Moves Boys State Soccer Championships From Wichita to Topeka

The Kansas State High School Activities Association is shifting its upcoming boys state soccer championships north. Next weekend’s tournament will move from Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex to Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, kwch.com reported.

The governing body pointed directly to the October 17 deadly crash at the Wichita facility. A pickup struck a soccer field during that incident, leaving two people dead and ten others injured.

Respecting Impacted Communities

In a public release announcing the shift, KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick explained the rationale behind the sudden venue change.

We recognize that the events of two weeks ago have deeply affected many within our membership, Faflick said. Relocating this year’s championship event is a gesture of respect for those communities and all who continue to feel the impact of that tragedy.

KSHSAA stated that moving the games served the best interests of both participating schools and the communities bearing the weight of the tragedy. Representatives from Scheels Stryker Sports Complex and Visit Wichita discussed the situation with state athletic officials, with all parties expressing understanding and support for the decision.

Faflick acknowledged the venue’s long-standing partnership with the state association. Larry Inlow and his team at Stryker, along with Josh Howell and Visit Wichita, have been outstanding hosts for KSHSAA events for many years.
