Lubbock Christian Responds to Season-Opening Disappointment With Dominant 31-Point Victory in Honolulu
What a difference a day makes when you are playing basketball in paradise. Less than 24 hours after suffering a tough four-point defeat to open their campaign, the Lubbock Christian University basketball team turned Friday’s heartbreak into an 80-49 masterclass against Western Colorado inside the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Center.
The Lady Chaps wasted no time taking control on Saturday afternoon, shooting a blistering 58.6 percent from the field. Sophomores Mattie Dollar and Meg Meekins combined for 37 points, fueling a bounce-back performance that yielded the program’s largest margin of victory immediately following a loss in more than seven years. LCU controlled the floor for the final 36-plus minutes of the contest, building a comfortable 39-25 halftime cushion before slamming the door shut with a 24-10 third-quarter surge.
Sophomore Standouts Lead the Offensive Explosion
Dollar backed up a career-high 20-point outing from Friday with another 20-point performance on Saturday. The sophomore guard was hyper-efficient, converting 9 of 11 field-goal attempts, including a 2-of-3 clip from beyond the arc. She also notched career highs with five assists and three steals, finishing with a team-best plus-26 rating.
Meekins, the reigning Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year, bounced back from a quiet two-point opener to score 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. The supporting cast matched that energy. Ally Ihler chipped in a career-high 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Kaitlyn McAdoo added five points in under nine minutes off the bench. In total, 10 different Lady Chaps found the scoring column, and six players connected from long distance.
Interior Dominance and Defensive Pressure Tell the Story
The starkest contrast from Friday’s 58-54 loss to Winona State came in the paint. LCU was limited to just 14 interior points in their season opener, but against Western Colorado, they erupted for 52 points inside compared to the Mountaineers’ 22. Defensive intensity played an equal role in the blowout.
LCU forced 19 turnovers and converted them into 24 points. The Mountaineers shot just 34.8 percent from the floor for the afternoon and hit a brick wall during the third quarter, making only 2 of 12 field-goal attempts. Penelope Urquhart led Western Colorado with 15 points and nine rebounds, but the team’s five bench points could not counter LCU’s depth.
Looking Ahead to the Home Opener
The victory lifts LCU to 9-4 all-time in D2CCA-sanctioned tip-off tournaments and improves their record in Hawaii to 5-1. The Lady Chaps also preserved their unblemished all-time record against Western Colorado, moving to 4-0.
The two programs will see each other again much sooner than usual. Western Colorado is scheduled to visit Lubbock for the Lady Chaps’ home opener Nov. 9, while LCU prepares to face Alaska Anchorage on November 1, 2026.
