Aiea robbery suspect in custody following fatal shopping center attack
A 29-year-old man is in custody after a robbery at the Pearl Kai Shopping Center in Aiea left a 47-year-old man dead, according to reports from the Honolulu Police Department. The suspect was apprehended by officers with the HPD District 3 Crime Reduction Unit just before 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 7.
The arrest follows a violent encounter that occurred on the evening of Wednesday, November 4. As reported by KITV, the incident began around 8:50 p.m. outside a Baskin-Robbins located within the shopping center. An unknown male suspect approached the 47-year-old victim and initiated an argument before the situation turned physical.
During the ensuing assault, the suspect allegedly took the victim’s backpack and fled the scene on foot, according to Hawaii News Now. The victim collapsed and became unresponsive following the attack. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services transported the man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. While the specific nature of the injuries sustained by the victim has not been publicly released, the direct link between the robbery and the fatality has led to serious criminal charges.
The investigation into the Pearl Kai incident
The suspect, described by Hawaii News Now as a local man in his 40s—though HPD specifically identified him as 29 years old—was seen wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts, and a white wrap or brace on his left knee during the incident. He currently faces charges of manslaughter and first-degree robbery.

The legal path forward for the suspect remains in flux. While the arrest has been made, the exact final charges will be determined once the prosecutor’s office completes its review of the case details. This review process is a standard but critical step in ensuring the evidence gathered by the District 3 Crime Reduction Unit supports the specific degrees of the alleged crimes.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the robbery and the subsequent death remains ongoing. Authorities have indicated that anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact 911 or use CrimeStoppers to assist in the continued inquiry.
