Maritime College’s coed and women’s dinghy sailing teams each placed 11th overall at their fall championship regattas, held October 31 through November 1, Maritime Athletics reported.
The double 11th-place finish carried one significant consequence: the coed team’s result at the War Memorial in Annapolis earned the Privateers an automatic berth in the America Trophy, the spring championship event.
Eleventh at the War Memorial in Annapolis
At the War Memorial, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy, Maritime’s coed squad tallied 114 total points in a regatta marred by a lack of wind. Only five races went off in each division, two on Saturday and three on Sunday.
The berth was far from secure until the final moments. With two races to go, Maritime sat in 13th place overall, one spot outside America Trophy qualifying. The “A” crew of Adam Starck of Lakewood, Ohio, and Amelia Tebbens of Center Moriches, New York, moved the Privateers up with back-to-back ninth-place finishes in Races 4 and 5. Nathaniel Hartwell of Daphne, Alabama, and Juliana Sarich of New York, New York, then took seventh in the final “B” division race.

Virginia Tech and Webb both faltered in the last race, guaranteeing qualification for Maritime. The Privateers edged the Hokies by a single point for 11th in the final standings, with both Maritime boats tallying 57 points apiece.
Eleventh Again on Seneca Lake
The women’s team met its own 11th-place finish at the MAISA Fall Women’s Championship, held at William Smith College in Geneva, New York. Wind was not an issue on Seneca Lake, where 10 races were sailed in each division, and Maritime’s crews finished with nearly identical totals.
Nicole Ostapowicz of Amityville, New York, and Madeline Ammatuna of Coventry, Rhode Island, tallied 88 points in the “A” boat, with a fifth-place finish in Race 6 as their best result. The “B” squad of Nikita Troast of Brooklyn, New York, and Grace Wilson of Lexington Park, Maryland, scored 87 points, highlighted by a fourth in Race 7 and a fifth in Race 4. The Privateers’ overall score was 175 points.
Jane Pimental transported the women’s team to Geneva and remained on site all weekend.
That 11th-place double closes out Maritime’s fall campaign. The spring portion of the season begins in March.
