Maritza Sanchez Critical After Car Crashes Into Phoenix Bus Stop

South Phoenix Crash Leaves Six Injured as Family Demands Bus Stop Safety Upgrades

A morning commute turned into a critical emergency when a vehicle plowed into people waiting at a South Phoenix bus stop, injuring six people total and leaving a 26-year-old mother of two hospitalized in critical condition. The collision occurred near 46th Street and Baseline Road at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, prompting an active police investigation into whether speed played a role in the crash.

Emergency responders arrived to find a scene where a single vehicle had struck the transit stop. Officials confirmed that six individuals required medical treatment following the impact. One victim was trapped and had to be extricated by rescue crews before being transported for urgent care.

Among those injured is Maritza Sanchez, a 26-year-old ASU student and mother who was on her way to work when the vehicle veered off the road. Her partner, Johnny Garcia, said that she remains in critical condition but is showing signs of improvement. She's an amazing person. She's a wonderful mom, Garcia said, noting that her department is backing her and helping in every which way.

Calls for Infrastructure Improvements Along Baseline Road

Michael Sanchez, the brother of Maritza Sanchez, pointed out that speeders and dangerous drivers are common along Baseline Road. There also needs to be more safety precautions for the people waiting at the bus stop, Sanchez said. Because if you're waiting for a bus, you shouldn't have to be worried about your life or your well-being.

A preliminary investigation shows speed was a potential factor in the crash. In addition to Sanchez, officials with the Phoenix Union High School District confirmed that another one of the individuals struck at the bus stop is a current student. Police have not released any more information about the other victims or driver.

An online fundraiser has been established to help cover medical expenses and support Maritza Sanchez’s family during her recovery. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the driver as the investigation continues.
