First lady Melania Trump hosted Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House on Thursday, calling for a “more enduring” peace in Ukraine after brokering a rare six-day ceasefire that allowed hundreds of civilians to evacuate a besieged city, according to SCMP.
White House Meeting Heralds Push for Wider Peace
Dmitriev thanked Trump on behalf of President Putin and on behalf of the people of the Russian Federation for her distinguished humanitarian role in resolving the Oleskhy situation. Arakhamia, the head of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s ruling faction in Ukraine’s parliament, urged the first lady to keep going with her mission, hoping the deal would create momentum to actually keep the peace when the peace comes.
Speaking at the White House, Trump expressed hope the Oleshky ceasefire would inspire progress toward lasting peace. Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire,
she said, adding that she had written personal letters to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The ceasefire in Oleshky would not be possible without President Putin and President Zelensky. Their cooperation establishes a meaningful precedent for advancing peace throughout the region,
she added.

The meeting comes as the Trump administration prepares to lead trilateral peace talks with Russia and Ukraine in the United Arab Emirates next week. Delegations from France, Germany, Britain, and NATO will also attend, alongside the World Bank. Another gathering of the Coalition of the Willing, a group of Ukraine’s closest allies, is scheduled for November 19.
President Donald Trump revealed on Thursday that he had an unscheduled meeting with Dmitriev, the Russian envoy, following the event hosted by the first lady. US President Donald Trump predicted on Thursday an imminent deal with Russia covering Ukraine and “all of Europe”, after his wife, first lady Melania Trump, hosted officials from the two warring countries at the White House.
Oleshky Ceasefire Offers Humanitarian Breakthrough
The foundation for Thursday’s talks was a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, which Trump announced on October 23 after raising the humanitarian crisis with Russian and Ukrainian leadership. The six-day truce, which began October 27 and ended November 2, allowed roads to be demined and residents to depart for either Ukraine or Russia.
The situation in Oleshky had grown dire. The city, located on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River in the occupied Kherson region, had a prewar population of about 24,000. Per the Office of the First Lady, roughly 24,000 people lived in Oleshky before the war, and today, an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 residents remain, with most of the residents primarily elders who have been unable to leave, along with 50 children.

Ukraine, however, accused Russian forces of exploiting the temporary pause to reinforce their military positions in the area.
Trump’s office said she worked as the “exclusive intermediary” through channels previously established while working to reunite children separated from families during the war. The mission was a success,
Trump posted on X, adding that she hoped Oleshky “serves as a foundation for lasting peace between both nations.” She said she first became aware of the crisis in Oleshky in September of this year, and she directed advisers “to engage with Russia and Ukraine” on her behalf. She said she used the communication channels they had previously established during her reunification efforts to coordinate the ceasefire.
Ukraine Honors Trump’s Role Amidst Diplomatic Maneuvering
Ukraine recognized Trump’s efforts by awarding her the Order of Princess Olga, 1st Class, the country’s highest state honor.
During the White House event, Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets presented Trump with the award. Trump then gave Dmitriev and Arakhamia personal letters to deliver to Putin and Zelenskyy, though she did not respond to shouted questions from reporters.
The diplomatic activity comes amid renewed efforts to end Russia’s nearly five-year war against Ukraine. Zelenskyy said he had very detailed, hour-and-a-half-long
conversations with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner ahead of next week’s talks in Abu Dhabi, the first discussions between all three sides since February. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to attend a November 9-10 Group of Seven foreign ministers’ meeting in Marseille, France, where Ukraine will be among the key issues.
While the Oleshky ceasefire was respected by both sides, Russia has repeatedly rejected calls for a wider ceasefire since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022. The rare halt in fighting marked the first significant pause in hostilities between Russia and Ukraine in four years of war. Speaking to CNN while en route to Washington DC, Dmitriev said that a key motivating factor in his work as an interlocutor was his “deep belief in cooperation between the US and Russia.” I’m focused on US-Russia relations in general and if there’s a humanitarian situation to solve, I’m always trying to help,
he said.
During her remarks, the first lady touted her direct involvement “in every stage of the planning” of the ceasefire, including reviewing plans, aerial images, roadways and evacuation routes. We were not born to spend our lives hiding in terror, watching the sky for drones and missiles, or scanning the grounds for mines,
the first lady said. We are alive to love, create, explore, and love. Let Oleshky be the modest spark that grows into a lasting flame of peace.
