Met Gala Announces New 2027 Theme extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday

The Met’s 2027 Gala Shifts to the Everyday After Galliano’s Fall

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has scrapped its controversial John Galliano retrospective and unveiled a new 2027 Met Gala theme: “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.” NBC New York reported the exhibit will explore how designers transform familiar garments like jeans, T-shirts, and even paper and plastic. The gala, a fashion cornerstone, is set for May 3, 2027—the traditional first Monday in May.

This pivot is a dramatic course correction from the museum’s original plan. The Galliano exhibit was canceled just over two months ago, after intense pressure from donors, city officials, and the Jewish community. The timing was particularly fraught: the 2027 gala would have fallen on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Critics like New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin met with museum leaders. Menin called the cancellation “the correct decision, as the harm and pain this was causing was simply unacceptable.”

A Curator’s Desperate Pivot

When the Galliano show was abandoned, the scramble began. Andrew Bolton, the head curator of the Costume Institute, admitted there was “no Plan B.” “I had no Plan B, to be honest,” Bolton said this week. “There wasn’t another exhibition already researched and ready to go.” The original “John Galliano: Horizons” exhibit, announced in late July, had been in development for months, with the museum actively collecting his designs. The museum had promised to confront the British designer’s “derogatory conduct that fundamentally altered his career and public reception”—a reference to past antisemitic and racist statements. A month later, the show was scrapped entirely.

The idea for “extraORDINARY,” however, was not entirely new. Bolton revealed it had been a “twinkle in my eye” while working on last year’s “Costume Art” exhibit. “Everyday clothes carry extraordinary amounts of meaning,” he explained. “We have a favorite T-shirt, we have a favorite pair of jeans, and we wear them until they literally fall apart. And those meanings develop through wearing.” The new show will examine how designers reimagine these personal items through craft and conceptual wit.

“I like the idea that designers turn these familiar things into these incredible sources of wonder.”

The original Galliano plan promised to confront his “derogatory conduct that fundamentally altered his career”—a direct reference to the 2010 and 2011 incidents that led to his firing from Dior. Galliano, who attributed the comments to drug and alcohol addiction, issued a statement upon the show’s cancellation. “I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it.”

The Museum’s Painful Accountability

Bolton’s statement after the cancellation laid bare the museum’s difficult position. I believe deeply in the responsibility of museums to examine difficult histories with rigor, candor, and care, he said. I also recognize the pain and concern this exhibition has caused. After extensive discussion, I support the decision not to proceed. Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director and a longtime Galliano supporter, called his decision to cancel “very courageous and a measure of the man he is.”

The new exhibit, opening to the public on May 9, 2027, and running through January 9, 2028, aims to be more inclusive. According to the Met and reported by CBS News, the show will “examine how design reveals unexpected possibilities within everyday things” and consider “how wearing, styling, and caring for them shapes their significance over time.” This differs from typical blockbuster fashion exhibits, which often center on a single legendary designer. “The ordinary is never quite as simple as it appears,” said Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of The Costume Institute.

The Gala’s Unanswered Questions

While the exhibit’s theme is set, the details that define the Met Gala are still forthcoming. The hosts for the May 3 gala and the official dress code—directly inspired by “extraORDINARY”—have yet to be announced. Funding also goes toward other museum activities. Last year’s code, “Fashion is Art,” drew inspiration from the preceding exhibit, suggesting guests will be encouraged to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. Last year’s dress code was “Fashion is Art,” which was based on the “Costume Art” exhibit and gala theme.
