Missouri Running Back Ahmad Hardy Plays After Being Shot in Leg

Nearly six months after being wounded in the leg during a shooting at an outdoor concert, Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy stepped back onto the turf on Saturday night at Arkansas.

The 20-year-old entered the No. 23 Tigers’ 34-10 victory late in the first quarter, greeted by an ovation from Missouri fans. He finished the night with two carries for 5 yards, marking his return to the field.

A Long Road Back From Mississippi

The journey to that first-quarter snap began on May 10 in Laurel, Mississippi. An innocent bystander at a concert when he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, Hardy previously racked up 1,649 yards and a program-best 16 touchdowns during the 2025 campaign.

Law enforcement apprehended an individual in connection with the gunfire, filing two felony counts of aggravated assault against the accused. Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz indicated this week that the injury required a metal rod to be inserted in his femur, the large bone in the upper part of the leg.

For an athlete, the time off the field led to his mind wandering at times. To combat this, Hardy noted that he pushed through by reading his Bible and sticking close to teammates.

“Me, mentally, I’m a very strong mental person,” Hardy said. “Whatever I put my mind to, I can do it. If the good Lord said I can do it then I can do it.”

When asked about taking game contact, Hardy offered a simple assessment: “It felt the same. My body is fully healed, so it’s nothing different. … Everybody has been there every day [supporting], literally from coaches to staff to the players. Everybody has been real supportive and I’m taking heed to that.”

Sharing the Backfield Load

Hardy’s return adds to a Missouri offense that saw fellow running back Jamal Roberts, the Tigers’ leading rusher entering the weekend, rush for 138 yards and a touchdown against the Razorbacks. Roberts noted that he was happy to see Hardy return to the lineup.

“He was in good spirits,” Roberts said about Hardy. “Probably a little bit emotional just knowing the situation he came from, but that’s part of it. He’s still in good spirits, still has high hopes and is in good prayers.”

Drinkwitz shared that sentiment during his opening statement following the win.

“I want to say I’m really, really proud of Ahmad Hardy,” Drinkwitz said. “It’s been a long road to get back here. It’s been a very difficult challenge for everybody. … To be able to come in here and get us a big first down, I’m really proud of him.”

For a player whose 2025 season included 1,649 yards and a school-record 16 touchdowns, Saturday’s 5 yards on two carries marked his return to the field.
