Marie-Alix, Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein, dies five years ago

Five Years Since the Passing of Marie-Alix, Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein

Today marks the fifth anniversary since Marie-Alix, Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein, lost her life at the age of 98 on this very date in 2021.

The milestone brings renewed focus not just to her long public and humanitarian life, but also to the enduring mysteries surrounding her personal jewelry collection—specifically the provenance of the Diamond Tiara she famously wore a quarter-century ago.

An Aristocratic Lineage Shaped by Diplomacy and Conflict

Princess Marie Alix entered the world as the daughter of Prince Stephan of Schaumburg-Lippe and Duchess Ingeborg of Oldenburg. Her family tree was deeply woven into the dynastic fabric of Europe. Her paternal grandfather, Prince Georg of Schaumburg-Lippe, ruled the principality from 1893 until his death in 1911, and her uncle, Adolf II, served as the last reigning Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe. On her mother’s side, her grandfather was Friedrich August II, the last reigning Grand Duke of Oldenburg.

Her father’s career in German diplomacy took the family across the globe, leading to childhood residencies in Sofia, Rome, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Santiago de Chile. As the Second World War drew to a close, Marie-Alix found herself staying with maternal relatives in Lensahn, in eastern Holstein. It was there that she met Hereditary Prince Peter of Schleswig-Holstein.

The couple were third cousins through shared descent from Prince Georg Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe and Princess Ida of Waldeck and Pyrmont. They married in 1947 at Glücksburg Castle and settled on the Gut Bienebek estate in Schleswig-Holstein. They had four children: Princess Marita, born in 1948; Christoph (1949–2023); Alexander, born in 1953; and Ingeborg, born in 1956. Peter inherited the ducal title when his father passed away in 1965, and Marie-Alix served as Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein from then until her husband’s passing at age 58 in 1980.

Social Welfare, Education, and the Famous Royal Cruises

Away from dynastic formalities, Marie-Alix dedicated decades to social welfare and education. She served for many years as vice-chair of the Schleswig-Holstein branch of the German Red Cross, focusing on healthcare and humanitarian aid.

In the summers of 1954 and 1956, Marie-Alix and Peter joined European royalty on the celebrated “Cruise of the Kings,” organized by King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece. Decades later, in 1988, she welcomed the then-Prince of Wales—now King Charles III—to Glücksburg Castle alongside her son Christoph and other family members.

The Unresolved Mystery of the Diamond Tiara

Among the tangible legacies of the Duchess is the spectacular Diamond Tiara she wore 25 years ago. The exact origin of the piece is not known. Unlike the stunning Diamond Bow Tiara belonging to her mother-in-law, Princess Marie Melita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein, this piece is likely an heirloom originating from Princess Marie Alix’s own family.

The piece has seen rare public outings. Baron Wilfried von Plotho’s 1975 wedding to the Duke and Duchess’s eldest daughter, Princess Marita of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderborg-Glücksborg, featured the item, and Duchess Marie-Alix herself donned it subsequently at Schloss Salem for the 2001 wedding ball celebrating Hereditary Prince Bernhard of Baden and Stephanie Anne Kaul. While the Diamond Bow Tiara has been worn recently, we await a reappearance of this Diamond Tiara!
