New York Election Results: Hochul and Democrats Win NYC Races

Election Day is officially in the books across New York City, bringing victories for incumbent statewide leaders and an increase in early participation, ny1.com reported. Voters cast ballots in crucial races for governor, attorney general, comptroller, and local congressional seats, while also passing a slate of municipal ballot questions.

The nine-day early voting window saw 690,526 city residents head to the polls. According to the city’s Board of Elections, that figure represents a nearly 60% increase in early voting turnout compared to the previous gubernatorial race in 2022.

Incumbent Sweeps in Statewide Contests

In the top-of-the-ticket statewide matchups, New York voters chose continuity. Democrat Kathy Hochul secured her second term as governor. Meanwhile, fellow Democrats Letitia James and Tom DiNapoli won re-election as state attorney general and state comptroller, respectively.

Voters also decided a sweeping package of five local ballot questions in the five boroughs. Crafted by Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Charter Commission on Government Efficiency, known as COGE, all five proposals passed.

Down-ballot races for the U.S. House of Representatives brought a mix of familiar faces and new representatives to Washington. In Queens, incumbent Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks secured a commanding victory in the 5th Congressional District, pulling in 80.5% of the vote with more than 91% of expected returns in by 1:15 a.m., according to the Associated Press. Rep. Grace Meng similarly defended her seat in the 6th District with 68.6% of the vote.

Brooklyn and Queens witnessed a shift in the 7th Congressional District, where Democratic candidate Claire Valdez won the race to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez, capturing 83% of the vote. In the 8th District, Hakeem Jeffries won 79.2% of the vote. Jeffries is positioned to become the first Black speaker of the House following national Democratic gains.
