Northwestern Volleyball Plays Illinois and Hosts Rutgers This Weekend

The Northwestern Wildcats volleyball team enters a weekend of Big Ten action, beginning with a match against Illinois before returning home to host Rutgers. This stretch serves as a test for Northwestern before a West Coast swing against Oregon and Washington.

The Wildcats are stepping into a rivalry defined by historical dominance and recent shifts in power. The upcoming match against the Illinois Fighting Illini carries significant weight; while Northwestern has struggled historically in Champaign, they enter this contest having secured their first road victory over Illinois since 2008 during the 2025 season finale. That win snapped a punishing 12-match losing streak for the Wildcats on Illinois soil.

The Battle for In-State Supremacy

Illinois enters the matchup with a 14-7 record, though their season has been a rollercoaster of volatility. The Illini have spent much of the year drifting in and out of the AVCA/Taraflex Top 25, proving they can beat the best while remaining susceptible to upsets. In September, Illinois notched back-to-back wins over ranked opponents Minnesota (then No. 15) and USC (then No. 23), followed by a dominant sweep of No. 22 Washington in early October.

However, that peak was short-lived. Illinois stumbled through a stretch where they lost four of five matches, only regaining their footing last weekend with victories over Maryland and Rutgers. For Northwestern, the challenge is not just the current form of the Illini, but the ghosts of the program’s history. Northwestern has faced Illinois more than any other opponent in its history, yet the all-time record is a stark 33-67 in favor of the Illini.

The “so what” of this matchup transcends a single win. For Northwestern, winning in Champaign would follow a long period where Illinois held a streak of 12 straight victories over the ‘Cats there. For Illinois, a win is an opportunity to build on their season after having been in and out of the AVCA/Taraflex Top 25.

Northwestern Holds Advantage over Struggling Rutgers

Following the Illinois trip, the Wildcats return to Evanston to host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. On paper, this is a matchup where Northwestern holds the clear advantage. The Wildcats have won eight of their last nine meetings against Rutgers and boast a commanding 14-2 all-time record against the program.

Rutgers arrives in Evanston in the midst of a conference collapse. Since picking up a lone conference victory against Ohio State on October 1, the Scarlet Knights have dropped seven straight matches in conference play. Their history of success against Northwestern is nearly nonexistent; their only two victories over the Wildcats occurred on October 27, 2019, in Piscataway, and November 23, 2024, in Evanston.

The stakes for Rutgers are immediate and brutal. Before they even reach Evanston, they must face No. 11 Purdue on Thursday. The Saturday match against Northwestern follows a period where Illinois lost four of five matches.

The contrast is sharp: Northwestern has won eight of the last nine meetings against Rutgers, while the Rutgers squad has dropped seven straight matches in conference action.

Wildcats Prepare for West Coast Matches

While this weekend focuses on regional rivals, the broader strategic goal is preparation for next week’s travel. The Wildcats are scheduled for a trip to the West Coast, featuring two matches in a short window.

  • Friday: A 9 p.m. CT match against Washington.
  • Sunday: An 8 p.m. CT match against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene.

The disparity in the upcoming opponents is striking. On one hand, they face a Rutgers team that has forgotten how to win in the Big Ten; on the other, they face an Illinois team capable of sweeping Top 25 opponents.

Historically, the Wildcats have spent decades in the shadow of the Illini, but the gap is closing.
