Patrick Mahomes has found a moment of celebration away from the gridiron as the Kansas City Current, the NWSL team he co-owns, secured a spot in the league semifinals.
The victory came Saturday at CPKC Stadium, where the Current defeated Angel City FC 1-0 in an intense extra-time match.
The decisive moment arrived in the 96th minute when forward Michelle Cooper converted a penalty kick. This goal broke a stalemate that had persisted throughout regulation, effectively halting Angel City’s 10-match unbeaten streak and propelling the Current forward in the postseason bracket, according to Gridiron Heroics.
Mahomes, who has been a co-owner of the club since 2023 alongside his wife, Brittany Mahomes, and co-founders Angie and Chris Long, acknowledged the achievement by sharing the news on his Instagram story.
This marks the third time in the history of the franchise that the Current have advanced to the semifinal round. They now await the outcome of the match between Gotham FC and the Seattle Reign to determine their next opponent on the path to the championship.
While the soccer pitch provided a celebratory distraction, the reality of the NFL season demands Mahomes’ immediate attention. The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for a critical Week 9 matchup against the New York Jets, scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at Arrowhead Stadium.
Mahomes continues to perform at a high level individually. The three-time Super Bowl winner and two-time league MVP has completed 154 of 232 passes this season for 1,795 yards and 12 touchdowns. The upcoming game against the Jets will be broadcast on CBS as the Chiefs look to regain the momentum they established during their 5-0 start to the season.
