The Philadelphia Union officially secured a berth in the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs on Wednesday, after Red Bull New York lost to the New England Revolution. This marks the club’s 10th postseason appearance in its history and its eighth trip to the playoffs in the last nine seasons, the Philadelphia Union reported.
The Union climbed the Eastern Conference table following the FIFA World Cup break, finding a new gear under the leadership of Interim Head Coach Ryan Richter.
The match that sealed Philadelphia’s fate featured a familiar face: Dániel Gazdag. The former Union midfielder and the club’s all-time leading scorer provided the late game-winner for the Revolution, effectively knocking Red Bull New York out of the equation and pushing Philadelphia into the postseason.
The Path to the Postseason
The Union didn’t stroll into this position. Their climb up the standings was a recovery, turning the season around during the latter half of the calendar.
The immediate goal has shifted from survival to seeding. In the current MLS playoff structure, the difference between a top-seven seed and an eighth-or-ninth seed is the difference between a comfortable cushion and a high-stakes gamble. Seeds 1 through 7 earn automatic entry into the Round One Best-of-3 Series. Those landing in the 8th or 9th spots must survive a single-match Wild Card game just to enter the main bracket.
Philadelphia now faces a critical final stretch to determine where they land in that hierarchy. Following a trip to Nashville SC, the Union have two regular-season hurdles remaining:
- October 31: A road match against FC Cincinnati.
- November 7: A home clash against Toronto FC on Decision Day at Subaru Park.
Decision Day serves as the finale for all 30 clubs. In the Eastern Conference, the action kicks off at 4 p.m. ET, leading into the Western Conference slate at 7 p.m. ET.

The Stakes of the 2026 Format
The road to the MLS Cup Final on December 18 is designed to reward regular-season dominance while keeping the pressure high for the bubble teams. With 18 clubs qualifying—nine from each conference—the margin for error in the early rounds is slim.
The Wild Card games are set for November 18, followed immediately by the Round One Best-of-3 Series starting November 20. The tournament then narrows through the Conference Semifinals (December 5–6) and Conference Finals (December 11–12).

Beyond avoiding the Wild Card match, the finalist with the best regular-season record earns the right to host the MLS Cup Final. For Philadelphia, returning to Subaru Park for the postseason would be the reward for their second-half climb up the Eastern Conference table.
Season Ticket Members Get Priority Playoff Access
For the supporters, the focus now turns to Subaru Park. Full Season Ticket Members are guaranteed access to purchase playoff tickets. Other fans are encouraged to seek priority access through the club’s official channels as tickets become available for the November and December dates.
The Union’s ability to consistently reach the playoffs—eight times in nine years—speaks to a stability in the league’s environment.
Whether they enter as a top seed or a Wild Card, the Union have surged up the standings following the FIFA World Cup break. The question now is whether the momentum generated under Ryan Richter can carry them through a Best-of-3 series and all the way to the final whistle on December 18.
