Police Identify Juvenile Following University of Utah Sorority Incident

University of Utah students balanced Halloween celebrations with heightened caution following a campus security advisory prompted by a trespassing and vandalism incident on Greek Row.

A Broken Window and a Campus Alert

The sequence of events began when an unknown individual followed four students, attempted to gain entry into their sorority house, and subsequently broke a window using a rock. In response, the university increased security measures across Greek Row and coordinated directly with the Salt Lake City Police Department.

For students preparing for holiday gatherings, the advisory introduced an unexpected sense of vulnerability.

Student Reactions to Campus Vulnerability

“When I first read about it, I was honestly shocked, because I never thought something like that would ever happen. But it really brings it to light, that no matter what there’s always a possibility something would happen,” University of Utah sophomore Sam Kofoed said.

Salt Lake City Police confirmed that the individual responsible has since been identified as a juvenile.

Police Confirm Juvenile Suspect and Ongoing Inquiry

“We understand that there may have been some property damage that was there, and the University of Utah put out some information, looking for who this person was, because they didn’t know who he is. That person has been identified and the investigation is continuing and there’s no threat to the public,” said Lt. Steve Wooldridge.

Despite the reassurance from law enforcement regarding public safety, students within Greek life organizations adjusted their holiday plans to incorporate proactive safety measures.

“The more people, the more likely something may happen so just making sure there’s enough people that can help out if something does go wrong is something that we take very seriously to make sure everyone is safe and everyone is having a good time,” Kofoed said.
