Porsche to Offer Manual Transmission for 2027 911 Carrera S in North America

Porsche is swimming against the current in an automotive market where automakers are steadily abandoning manual gearboxes, announcing that a six-speed manual transmission is returning to the Porsche 911 Carrera S for the 2027 model year. The announcement was made during Monterey Car Week, according to MotorTrend. Officially designated as the 2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S with MT Package, the new variant will be offered exclusively for the North American market and comes paired exclusively with rear-wheel drive.

Driving enthusiasm and rising customer demand heavily influenced the decision. Timo Resch, the president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, noted that the automaker saw rising demand from online fans, direct customers, and dealers, which initiated conversations with engineers and executives to build a business case for the car. High enthusiasm for existing models served as a strong indicator, highlighted by the Motor1 report detailing that 80 percent of Porsche 911 GT3 buyers opted for the manual transmission.

Performance Hardware and Expanded Standard Equipment

The manual transmission used in the Carrera S is the same unit found in the 911 Carrera T. Rather than serving as a simple standalone alternative to the standard eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, the MT Package bundles the manual gearbox with an extensive list of performance upgrades and standard equipment.

The center-lock wheels provide a functional weight reduction, saving more than 17 pounds compared to standard Carrera S units. Despite the added hardware, the coupe variant equipped with the MT Package weighs 3,327 pounds, which is just 11 pounds heavier than a Carrera T Coupe.

Brakes, Customization, and Interior Features

Stopping power is handled by 408mm cast iron discs with six-piston fixed calipers at the front and 380mm discs with four-piston calipers at the rear. Unlike the Carrera T, the S variant also offers optional Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes.

Inside the cabin, drivers find a walnut shift knob crowning the shifter to provide a traditional sports-car feel. Four-way Sport Seats Plus come standard, with optional upgrades available for 14-way adjustment, 18-way adjustment, or folding lightweight carbon-fiber buckets. Exterior and interior customization remains extensive, featuring more than 17 exterior colors alongside Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus options through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. Distinctive touches include a graphic of the manual shift pattern on the dashboard and special puddle lights that project the six-speed shift pattern onto the ground.

Pricing and Availability

With the addition of the new variant, Porsche now offers seven manual variants of the 911, joining options such as the Carrera T Coupe and Cabriolet, GT3, GT3 Touring, and GT3 S/C. Deliveries for the 2027 911 Carrera S with MT Package are scheduled to begin by the end of the year.

Pricing for the coupe starts at $169,450, while the convertible begins at $183,350. In Canada, pricing starts at $177,500 for the coupe and $191,800 for the convertible, with orders opening immediately upon announcement.
