Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement in principle to sign 16-year-old Manchester United forward JJ Gabriel, with the move expected to be completed in 2027, according to reports published Wednesday. Gabriel has not trained with United since walking out in September and has been training on his own in Spain.
Gabriel appeared against Atletico Madrid during United’s pre-season tour and reportedly requested to end his registration with the club following disagreements over his pathway into the senior side. The teenager, who turned 16 on October 6, joined United’s academy four years ago and quickly became one of its most highly rated prospects, featuring for the under-18 side at just 14. He was expected to become the club’s youngest debutant in September’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton, but instead began exploring senior football elsewhere. His record already includes a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut and the Premier League’s Under-18 player of the season award last term, when he was only 14. One United source described him as the best 15-year-old in Europe
, while former interim manager Darren Fletcher put it more bluntly: The world is his oyster.
Real Madrid Lead a Four-Club Race for Gabriel
Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Gabriel has agreed in principle to join the La Liga club, and other reports describe the deal being pushed toward completion. Bayern have stayed in touch with the player’s representatives but are considered outsiders, beaten by Madrid’s financial proposal and the Spanish club’s appeal.

Sources describe Gabriel as capable of operating in several attacking positions, earning recognition for his technical ability, close control and creativity on the ball. In recent years, Real Madrid have placed greater emphasis on recruiting young international players, blending veteran stars with elite prospects in their squad-building, so signing Gabriel would align with their goal of acquiring talent with substantial future upside.
Gabriel’s passport status is also seen as a factor in any move abroad: he has secured a European Union passport and holds an Irish passport. Either way, the documentation is expected to simplify a switch to continental Europe.
Carrick Urges Caution Over the Teenager’s Welfare
United head coach Michael Carrick, under whom Gabriel played during the club’s pre-season camp, has spoken carefully about the situation. Speaking after the EFL Cup defeat by Brighton, he said:
We’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation.
Michael Carrick, Manchester United head coach
He's a young boy, he's 15 and the biggest thing for me definitely and as a club point of view is looking after our younger players. Their welfare, their wellbeing, their exposure. And I think all of us we've got to be really conscious of that, really, in this situation. As a club, for sure, we're all involved in those conversations. I just think we've got to be very careful of that. He added
Carrick stressed that at 15, Gabriel’s welfare, well-being and exposure all matter, and that the club is involved in the conversations around him.

January 2027 Target and United’s Compensation
Nothing has been signed, so the deal remains open: Barcelona, Bayern and PSG are still monitoring and could yet try to persuade Gabriel to reconsider. The youngster could leave as early as January 2027, with the move expected to take place during the calendar year. United would be due compensation if he departs, though the figure will be lower if he signs for a club outside the Premier League.
From Manchester United’s perspective, parting with the teenager would be a letdown considering how much the club has put into developing him through its youth system. While Madrid currently appear to be leading the pursuit, Gabriel’s future will remain unresolved until the necessary agreements are signed, and the timing of any potential transfer remains uncertain.
