Richmond Kickers Name Brian Ownby as Head Coach

The Richmond Kickers have officially named Brian Ownby as the ninth head coach in the club’s history, moving him from an interim role to the permanent lead of the technical staff. This transition, announced Wednesday by Chairman and CEO Rob Ukrop, marks a homecoming for the Glen Allen native who spent years as one of the region’s most prominent professional players.

The move comes after a four-month trial by fire. Ownby took over as interim head coach on June 15, guiding the team through the final 22 matches of the 2026 campaign.

A late-season offensive surge

More importantly, he unlocked an offensive front that had previously struggled, producing 16 goals over the final nine matches of the regular season.

This tactical shift manifested in the growth of specific key players. Tarik Pannholzer and Lucca Dourado emerged as primary threats under Ownby’s direction, combining for 11 goal contributions—including eight goals—over the final eight matches of the season. This immediate impact on the scoreboard gave ownership the confidence that Ownby’s vision for the field could translate into consistent results.

“For me, I want to bring back an enjoyable product out there on the field. Something that matches what the fans believe in, what I believe in, what ownership believes in and the way I played the game. That’s the way I want to lead this group.”

From local standout to professional veteran

Ownby’s appointment is rooted in a pedigree that spans the entire American soccer pyramid. His journey began at Deep Run High School, where he secured a VHSL State Title, before moving to the University of Virginia. His time in Charlottesville was defined by high-stakes production, including 21 goals and 10 assists across 72 appearances. One of the defining moments of his collegiate career was a golden-goal strike in the NCAA College Cup national semifinal, which propelled the Cavaliers to the national final.

That domestic success mirrored his early international exposure. Ownby represented the United States at various youth levels, most notably scoring against Cameroon while playing for the U-20 National Team at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. This early exposure to elite global competition established the “tireless work rate” that would define his professional playing days.

His professional trajectory took him to the highest levels of the U.S. game. After being selected in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by Houston Dynamo FC, he made 29 MLS appearances over three seasons. However, it was his time with the Richmond Kickers that cemented his status as a local icon. As reported by richmondkickers.com, Ownby’s impact during a 2013 loan spell was immediate; he recorded seven goals and seven assists in 21 matches, helping the club secure the Commissioner’s Cup and the No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs.

His playing career in Richmond wasn’t without hardship. He returned for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, but his 2015 campaign—which saw him tally five goals and four assists in 14 games—was cut short by a season-ending injury.

The stakes for the RVA community

Rob Ukrop emphasized that Ownby’s ability to identify talent and hold a new generation of players to a high standard makes him the right fit for the “new landscape of the USL.”

Ownby now faces the task of translating his personal history of winning—from Deep Run to the U-20 World Cup and the MLS—into a cohesive team identity. He has the trust of the front office and the respect of the stands. The question that remains is whether the offensive spark seen in the final nine matches of 2026 was a temporary surge or the blueprint for the Kickers’ future.
