Rowdy Tellez Elects Free Agency According to MLB.com Reporting

Fresh off a historic World Series title that ended a 57-year championship wait for the franchise, the Milwaukee Brewers organization is already seeing roster shifts ripple across the league. While the city celebrates its first-ever World Series victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, Rowdy Tellez has officially elected free agency, according to MLB.com reporting.

From the World Series Highs to Open Market Realities

The news puts the 31-year-old back on the open market, available to sign with any Major League Baseball team ahead of the 2027 season. Tellez spent the most recent stretch of his career with the Atlanta Braves, appearing in seven regular-season games and three postseason contests before the Braves were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. MLB.com noted his free agency election on October 29.

Tellez’s journey back to free agency follows a nine-season big league career that includes stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta, and Milwaukee. Over 783 career games, he has accumulated 123 home runs.

Looking Back at Milwaukee’s Slugger

Brewers fans remember Tellez for his tenure in Wisconsin. Originally acquired via a July 2021 trade with the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for right-handed pitchers Bowden Francis and Trevor Richards, the first baseman carved out a chapter in cream and blue.

His peak came during the 2022 campaign. In 153 games that year, Tellez hit 35 home runs and drove in 89 RBIs. That production stands as his best year of his MLB career.

Pitching Depth Adjustments in Milwaukee

The roster churn isn’t limited to veteran hitters. The Brewers also experienced movement on the pitching front just before their postseason run began against the San Diego Padres in October. Veteran right-hander Lyon Richardson, whom Milwaukee promoted to the big leagues on September 23 before designating him for assignment two days later, officially elected free agency on September 28 rather than accepting an outright assignment to the minor leagues.

Richardson made just a single appearance for Milwaukee this season, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Having originally joined the organization on a minor league deal in June, Richardson previously pitched a career-high 34 games for the Cincinnati Reds in 2025 with a 4.54 ERA, alongside 22 appearances for Triple-A Nashville where he posted a 4.23 ERA.

With Tellez now testing the open market and front offices mapping out their 2027 rosters, the lingering question remains which club will offer the veteran his next opportunity.
