Samsung has unveiled its latest crop of foldables at its Unpacked event, introducing a redesigned book-style form factor for the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8. Unlike previous models, the new device features a wider 4:3 inner display, making it shorter and wider than traditional book-style foldables.

According to Samsung, the all-new form factor is designed to make switching from the cover screen to the primary display more intuitive, allowing users to move easily from quick interactions on the cover screen to deeper viewing, reading, and gaming on the main display. Under the company’s naming scheme, the true successor to the previous Z Fold 7 is the bar-shaped Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which features a flex titanium design and a near-invisible, easy-open crease.

Display Specifications, Hardware, and Camera Setup

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 consists of a dual-screen design featuring a 7.6-inch primary display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. Both screens use Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology, with the main display offering an 1848-by-2448 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, while the cover screen features a 1972-by-1248 resolution. When closed, the device measures a pocketable 4.5mm thin and weighs a reported 201 grams, making it the lightest Galaxy Z Fold model Samsung has produced so far.

Internally, the device runs on a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a 4,800mAh battery, though initial hands-on reviews note that devices in the lineup utilize either the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 or the Samsung Exynos 2600. For photography, the Fold 8 is equipped with dual 50MP rear cameras—comprising one primary sensor and one ultrawide sensor—along with a 10MP front-facing sensor for selfies. Video recording capabilities reach up to 8K resolution.

Pricing, Storage Configurations, and Availability

Pricing for the new foldable reflects its super-premium market position, influenced heavily by component pricing impacts from the AI data center boom. In the United States, Samsung has set the following retail tiers for the Galaxy Z Fold 8:

Additionally, the social media-friendly Galaxy Z Flip 8 joins the lineup as the most affordable option, priced at $2,299 for the 256GB version and $2,699 for the 512GB model.

New Galaxy AI Features and Software Integration

The latest generation of foldables incorporates new software capabilities, highlighted by Samsung’s Galaxy AI “Now Nudge” feature. If a user receives a text message asking about plans—such as an invitation for lunch next Thursday at 1pm—Now Nudge recognizes the date and time, displaying an “add event” or “check schedule” button. Tapping the prompt automatically opens a calendar in a split-screen view directly next to the chat window.

Similarly, the software can display a prompt to open a map in a split-screen view if a conversation involves discussing the location of a restaurant. These multitasking features leverage the screen real estate provided by the folding form factor.
