Sandia Area FCU begins construction on two branches in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho for late 2027

According to the Albuquerque Journal, Sandia Area Federal Credit Union has begun building two new branches—one in Albuquerque and another in Rio Rancho—with both expected to open in late 2027. The expansion will bring the credit union’s total branch count to nine, with the Albuquerque location planned for 1105 Snow Vista SW and the Rio Rancho site at 4551 Safelite NE, near U.S. 550.

The building spree marks a deliberate bet on brick-and-mortar banking at a moment when much of the credit union’s growth is happening online. Sandia Area serves nine counties across New Mexico, holds more than $1.4 billion in assets, and ranks as the fourth-largest credit union in the state. Its roughly 69,000 members have grown about 7% annually in recent years, according to Kevin Todd, CEO and President.

A Physical Footprint in a Digital Surge

Todd told the Journal that much of that membership growth has come through online channels, yet the credit union sees value in expanding its physical presence to build face-to-face connections. The two new sites were chosen because “both are areas of growing populations, and both locations are heavy commuter corridors,” he said.

Both branches will be full-service locations with drive-thrus. Each will contain four to five offices, and the Rio Rancho branch will also include a 12-person conference room that can be reserved for local events.

Kevin Todd, President and CEO of Sandia Area, said the credit union’s new branch prototype is designed to create lasting connections between staff, members, and the brand as members grow through their life and bring children and grandchildren, enabling a consistent experience synonymous with Sandia Area.

From Teller Lines to Open Lounges

The new construction follows a years-long modernization push. Its most recent new location before this project was a Santa Fe branch that opened in February 2022, though remodeling has continued at multiple existing branches in the years since. The credit union has moved away from traditional teller lines and bulletproof glass in favor of open, light-filled spaces. Three sites have already been renovated with the new look, including a West Side branch on Coors Boulevard that reopened this weekend.

Design firm Momentum, which specializes in credit union branches, designed the new locations to match that modern prototype. The design emphasizes wide-open sight lines, natural light, and views of the Sandia Mountains framed through plate glass windows, complemented by artwork celebrating the Albuquerque metro area. The layout replaces enclosed offices with café-style tables for in-depth conversations and quick-serve areas for faster transactions, staffed by what the credit union calls Universal Associates.

The Rio Rancho prototype also features a flexible community room that fits 12 to 18 attendees for financial education seminars, nonprofit gatherings, and small business meetings, accessible outside normal operating hours through the front vestibule.

The Counterintuitive Bet

Todd’s response, as reported by the Journal, is that physical spaces remain crucial for the consultative, relationship-focused service the credit union wants to provide—especially in high-growth suburbs where commuters pass the sites daily.

Looking for the Tenth Branch

Todd said Sandia Area is currently scouting another site in the Albuquerque area to build its 10th branch. With both new locations scheduled to open in late 2027, the credit union will have added three branches in roughly five and a half years, a pace that reflects both the growing population of the metro area and the institution’s confidence that in-person banking still matters to its members.
