Cerrillos Hills State Park Hosts Guided Geology Hike Across Ancient Terrain
Local geology expert Scott Renbarger will lead a guided trek through Cerrillos Hills State Park on Saturday, November 7th, 2026, offering participants a firsthand look at the ancient terrain that shaped the region's cultural and natural history.
The excursion kicks off at 10:00 a.m. from the park’s main entrance located at 44 Camino Turquesa in Los Cerrillos. Hikers will traverse a 1.5-mile loop featuring hilly terrain and uneven natural surfaces.
Park Access, Residency Fees, and Visitor Center Hours
Visitors arriving for the weekend hike should note current park entry guidelines and seasonal fee structures. New Mexico residents enjoy free day-use access from October 1st through April 30th, provided they present a valid New Mexico driver’s license or current state-registered vehicle documentation.

Out-of-state visitors face a permit fee of $10 per vehicle, which applies year-round. This fee is due upon arrival and must be paid in exact cash or check, with the white permit slip clearly displayed on the vehicle exterior. The park itself opens daily from sunrise to 9:00 p.m., with trail maps available right at the entrance.
For those looking to explore beyond the trails, the Cerrillos Village Visitor Center sits at 37 Main Street on the corner of 1st and Main. It operates on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or by appointment through 505-474-0196. The main park entrance sits half a mile north of Cerrillos Village along County Road 59.
