Six dead in Brooklyn house fire as officials investigate batteries

Six people died in a three-alarm Brooklyn house fire

Six people are dead and several others were injured after a massive three-alarm fire tore through a home in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn early Thursday morning.

The blaze broke out just before 1:40 a.m. at a residence on 58th Street. Flames shot from the windows of the two-story building, which officials say appears to have started on the second floor before spreading rapidly throughout the structure.

The human toll of the fire is significant. Four adults were pronounced dead at the scene, while two other victims—a man and a woman—died while being transported to the hospital. Beyond the fatalities, four residents and three firefighters sustained non-life‑threatening injuries, though one victim remains in critical condition.

Investigators focus on lithium‑ion batteries

As firefighters worked to contain the blaze throughout Thursday morning, investigators identified two lithium‑ion batteries at the scene. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials are working to determine if these batteries played a role in the ignition.

The destruction to the property was extensive. The front of the building was heavily charred, and much of the exterior was destroyed by the heat and flames. As crews worked to extinguish the fire, they were seen using ladders to search for hidden pockets of flame behind the walls and siding of the home.

Mayor Mamdani highlights rising e‑bike fire risks

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the tragedy during a television news broadcast on Thursday morning, acknowledging the loss of life and praising the efforts of the FDNY. While praising the FDNY for their courage in entering high‑danger environments to save lives, Mamdani pointed to a broader, systemic safety concern.

6 killed after possible battery fire in Brooklyn home

“We are currently tracking this fire that claimed the lives of six New Yorkers. It is devastating, and it is a reflection of a number of things. One, I want to always acknowledge the courage of our firefighters. who go in every single day, who go in every single day, no matter what the level of danger is, looking to save peoples lives,” Mamdani said. “And two, the importance of fire safety in this time. We are investigating what the cause of this fire is, but I can tell you that e‑bike fires as a whole have increased to more than 400 fires this year. They are something that can cause people to lose their lives as well as their livelihoods. We are really looking at every avenue we have to keep them safe.”

Before this morning’s fire, seven people had already died in lithium‑ion battery fires this year. This includes a particularly devastating fire in the Bronx last week, which claimed the lives of a mother and three children.

The growing pattern of battery‑related fires

Investigators have not yet released a definitive cause for the 58th Street fire, and it remains unclear if the two recovered batteries were the direct source of the blaze.
