Student Ambassador Life at Western Wyoming College

In a first-person essay published by westernwyoming.edu, graduating student ambassador Tara Countryman reflects on her undergraduate experience, detailing how campus housing shaped her academic journey and personal life at Western Wyoming College.

Set to graduate in December with a General Studies degree focused on Psychology and Communications, Countryman recounts navigating dorm life starting in Snowy Range Hall, where initial anxieties quickly gave way to lasting bonds. What started as a difficult first conversation with a freshman year roommate evolved into a lifelong friendship, complete with grocery store runs, shared meals, and eventual separation as the roommate departed for missionary work—though the two remain in contact.

Building Community in the Residence Halls

Campus life extended far beyond individual dorm rooms. Hallway fire alarms served as an unexpected catalyst for community building, introducing Countryman to neighbors who remain part of her active circle. Without the daily burdens of high school, students found unstructured time to sit, cook, and socialize in communal spaces.

When seeking solitude, Countryman utilized her downtime for studying, room decoration, and watching movies, or visited the commons room in Rocky Mountain Hall to play the piano. Sunday nights brought a different kind of gathering in Wind River Hall. Though identifying as a Baptist Christian rather than LDS, Countryman regularly joined a friend’s dorm for scripture study, using the weekly meetings as another avenue to forge connections.

Transitioning to the Next Chapter

Moving into Wind River Hall later in her tenure provided practical perks, including a personal kitchen space and independent quarters as she prepared for graduation. Looking ahead, Countryman plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree at Southwest Baptist University while working part-time at Maurices in Bolivar, Missouri, leaving behind the residence halls and memories that defined her time in Wyoming.
