Tatum O’Neal Emerges in Los Angeles With Walking Cane Six Years After Near-Fatal Stroke
Oscar-winning actress Tatum O’Neal was photographed in a rare public outing in Los Angeles, walking with the assistance of a cane alongside her family, as reported by Page Six. The 62-year-old screen star wore a classic black midi dress and navy blue suit jacket, accessorized with black loafers, a long necklace, and glasses. She was accompanied by her daughter Emily McEnroe and son-in-law Tim Massarelli, holding Massarelli’s hand for support as they navigated the area.
The sighting took place on Saturday, October 24, as O’Neal and her family left the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel. The actress had been attending The Hollywood Show, a two-day fan convention held at the hotel on October 23 and 24. Daily Mail originally obtained the photographs of the outing.
The Road to Recovery Following a 2020 Medical Crisis
The public appearance is a milestone in O’Neal's lengthy rehabilitation following a severe medical emergency. In 2023, the actress revealed that an overdose in May 2020 on a combination of pain medication, opiates, and morphine led to a six-week coma, a cardiac arrest, a number of seizures, and a near-fatal stroke at her Century City home in Los Angeles. She told People magazine that she had been an addict on and off for 30 to 40 years, noting, “I almost died.”
O’Neal explained that she had initially been prescribed pain medication for rheumatoid arthritis and back and neck pain at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the overdose, she was diagnosed with aphasia and spent time in rehabilitation working to regain her strength and memory.
Her son, Kevin McEnroe, told People that his mother had become very isolated and that there were times the family feared she would not survive. Describing her recovery, Kevin called it a “miracle,” adding that watching her want to live, learn, and stay sober has made him immensely proud.

A Historic Hollywood Legacy
O’Neal rose to fame alongside her late father, Ryan O’Neal, in Peter Bogdanovich’s 1973 classic film Paper Moon. In 1974, at just 10 years old, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, setting a record as the youngest competitive Oscar winner in history—a distinction she maintains to this day. Her career also included notable roles in The Bad News Bears and Little Darlings, alongside high-profile media attention regarding her marriage to former tennis champion John McEnroe, with whom she shares children Kevin, Sean, and Emily.
Days prior to her weekend appearance in Burbank, O’Neal shared a rare selfie on Instagram. In June 2025, she also delivered a speech at her son Kevin’s wedding to Fern Cozine.
