Trump Announces Russian Diesel Deal as Zelensky Condemns Agreement

US President Donald Trump announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to import Russian diesel into the United States, drawing sharp condemnation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

President Donald Trump announced a deal to obtain diesel from Russia, marking a reversal of years of American sanctions and diplomatic pressure on Moscow. Trump stated on social media that he secured the agreement during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the announcement, Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel, with an additional 500,000 tonnes arriving in November and 1 million tonnes immediately thereafter. A further 3 million tonnes are expected within a short period of time, depending on the operating condition of Russian refineries.

Trump stated that lowering fuel costs for American consumers, particularly farmers, ranchers, and truckers, remains his highest priority amid energy market turmoil.

Ukrainian drone strikes have caused Russia to experience two waves of severe fuel shortages this year, with diesel production estimated by the International Energy Agency to have fallen by nearly 30 percent. A mutual energy infrastructure pact had been pitched by Zelensky to Trump along with American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, though the offer was turned down.

Political Fallout in Washington and Diplomatic Talks in Miami

The breaking point occurred over the course of roughly eight hours of talks on Friday, as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner let the Ukrainian officials know that Donald Trump was set to converse with Vladimir Putin and intended to remove penalties on Russian diesel shipments. Representatives from the United States, the E3, the European Commission, Ukraine, and NATO met to discuss potential avenues to de-escalate and conclude the war with Russia ahead of winter.
