On Wednesday, November 11, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis will host its annual Veterans Day Hero Challenge at the Jordan and Fishers YMCAs. Participants will complete a workout called “CHAD 1000x,” which consists of 1,000 step-ups. The event honors Navy SEAL Chad Wilkinson, who took his own life on October 29, 2018, after suffering from traumatic brain injuries, blast wave injuries, and post-traumatic stress disorder following multiple deployments.
Completing the Workout Step-Ups
The workout is designed for all fitness levels, with scaling and modifications available. Participants can choose to complete the 1,000 step-ups as an individual, with a partner, or as a team. Three options are available: the “Slick” option with no rucksack and a self-selected step height; the “Standard” option using a 30-pound (for men) or 20-pound (for women) rucksack with a self-selected step height; and the “Expert” option using a 45-pound (for men) or 30-pound (for women) rucksack and a 20-inch box for step-ups.
Supporting Veteran Health Initiatives
The goal of the Veterans Day Hero Challenge is to raise awareness for veteran suicide and mental health issues while also contributing to solutions. All proceeds from the $35 registration fee will support veteran health initiatives and programs at the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. This includes providing services and resources for veterans.

Receiving Custom Event Patches
The event will be held at two locations. At the Jordan YMCA, located at 8400 Westfield Blvd in Indianapolis, the session is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. At the Fishers YMCA, located at 9012 E 126th Street in Fishers, there will be two sessions: one at 5:30 a.m. and another at 11:30 a.m. All participants will receive a custom event patch for the Hero Challenge 2026 series and another for the Memorial Day event.
