Watford 1-0 Lincoln: Mavididi scores as Hornets secure key win

Stephy Mavididi’s maiden strike for Watford gave head coach Alessio Dionisi much-needed relief with a tense 1-0 win against Lincoln City at Vicarage Road, Sky Sports reported. The on-loan winger’s deflected strike, which came just 38 seconds after the restart, settled a contest that had threatened to drift into another stalemate for the Hornets.

The victory matters because it represents only Watford’s second win in eight games and just their second clean sheet since March, pulling them four points clear of the Championship drop zone with a difficult home fixture against Middlesbrough looming next. For Dionisi, whose side had been under sustained pressure at home, the three points provide rare relief ahead of that test.

A Goal Born of Persistence and a Deflection

For 45 minutes, the match was a turgid affair, with both sides struggling to find rhythm through a congested midfield. Lincoln, solid but lacking incision, rarely tested home keeper Federico Ravaglia, while Watford made little headway despite Mavididi’s blocked shot after a jinking run and a 25-yard effort from fellow DR Congo international Edo Kayembe that flew just wide. Lincoln’s best chance of the first half came when Chiedozie Ogbene fired a wayward effort from distance.

Then, 38 seconds into the second half, Mavididi cut in off the left flank and whipped a curling shot toward the far corner. Imps goalkeeper George Wickens might have had it covered, but a slight deflection off Lincoln captain Sonny Bradley left him with little chance, and the ball nestled in the net to break the impasse.

Lincoln protested bitterly to referee James Bell that the throw-in leading to the goal had been awarded the wrong way after being quickly taken, but the decision stood. The Imps came close to an equalizer just before the hour mark when Deji Elerewe’s header clipped the bar, yet they lacked a cutting edge in the final third to trouble Ravaglia again.

History and Heartbreak on a Night of Tribute

The fixture held added significance as the clubs’ first competitive encounter since Luther Blissett scored twice to secure a 2-0 Watford triumph on a snow-covered field in 1979, and it also inaugurated the Graham Taylor Cup, a trophy to be contested whenever Watford and Lincoln clash competitively in tribute to the former England manager who guided both teams to the Fourth Division championship in the 1970s. For all the ceremony, the quality on display was poor, and the result was ultimately defined by a single moment of fortune and a refereeing decision that left Lincoln feeling hard done by.

“We’re gutted and feel a little bit hard done-by. The players’ effort and endeavours were incredible — this is a massive football club full of internationals and the result has been defined by a big error from the referee,” Lincoln joint head coach Tom Shaw said. “It’s a real tough one to take because it was our throw-in — people can get that wrong, I get that — but it’s been taken before it was awarded either way. We can’t complain about switching off because no-one knows which way it was going. It was a disaster for us to lose a game on those grounds, a big mistake has cost us what would have been a massive point.”

Shaw and fellow joint head coach Chris Cohen watched from the stands, both banned from the dugout after picking up three yellow cards in previous matches. “Chris and I have had words with the fourth official in previous games and that’s why we’ve ended up in the stands tonight, but we can’t fault the players’ effort and commitment,” Shaw added. “Yes, we could have been a bit better around the box but the performance was full of heart and desire and we deserved a point.”

Kyprianou Faces Ban After Fifth Booking

Watford moved four points clear of the drop zone with the win, but the victory came with a cost. Ever-present midfielder Hector Kyprianou’s fifth booking of the term will leave Dionisi short of midfield options when the Cyprus international serves a one-match ban. Meanwhile, a planned protest against owner Gino Pozzo and executive chairman Scott Duxbury outside the ground before kick-off attracted just 11 people, a sign that fan dissatisfaction, while vocal on social media, has not yet translated into mass action.

“I’ve spoken to Steph over the past few weeks. That’s normal when a player hasn’t been playing and is not happy,” Dionisi said. “Now I’m happy for him — Stephy was unhappy that he wasn’t getting enough minutes — like every player, he wants to play. It’s not easy for Steph when we change shape. It’s hard for him to play wing back, but now we’ve won and he scored the only goal, and he’ll be happy. I’m happy for my players, the fans and my club. This was only one match but it was important.”

Dionisi added that the win was important because Watford’s next match is at home to a big team in Middlesbrough: “It is better to prepare when we have won and I believe in my players.”

Lincoln slipped to a fifth defeat in seven games with the loss, a run that has left them searching for answers despite their stubborn defensive display. Watford, meanwhile, will look to build on this result when they host Middlesbrough at Vicarage Road in their next Championship fixture.
