Why Brent Venables Is No Longer the Right Fit for Oklahoma Football

Oklahoma football is staring down a reality that few in Sooner Nation ever expected to live through, and according to a report, the program’s current trajectory under head coach Brent Venables has simply fallen well short of historic expectations.

A Familiar Collapse on Home Turf

The numbers from Saturday night paint a grim picture in Norman. Following a 42-25 blowout loss to South Carolina, Oklahoma dropped to 4-4 on the season, facing the very real possibility of a 6-6 finish and another bowl trip. Former Sooner assistant coach Shane Beamer brought a 4-3 squad into Owen Field and completely manhandled the hosts, handing OU back-to-back home losses for the second time in three years under Venables.

The defense, which has fought valiantly all season, finally buckled under a relentless onslaught. South Carolina racked up 521 total yards, the most since Texas had 527 in 2023. Gamecocks quarterback Sellers carved up the defense, leaving Venables to admit the obvious in his postgame press conference.

“Incredibly pissed at myself,” Venables said in his postgame press conference. “For all of us, just embarrasing. It’s embarrassing. In every way.”

The Offensive Struggle and Coaching Turnover

While the defense has shown grit, the offensive side of the ball has been historically bad. In eight games now, OU has scored 20 total touchdowns, which includes two from the defense and two from the special teams. Venables initially brought in Ted Roof and later replaced him with Zac Alley before Alley bailed out to West Virginia.

The revolving door at coordinator has left the program searching for an identity.

Weighing the Buyout Against the Alternative

As the season winds down with daunting matchups against Florida, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Missouri on the horizon, athletic director Roger Denny, Randall Stephenson and the OU Board of Regents face a monumental decision. With a buyout north of $50 million attached to a recent contract extension, moving on from a coach who returned the program to the College Football Playoff just a year ago sounds radical to some. Yet, as the losses mount and the standard slips, the question facing OU leadership is no longer about the financial cost of a buyout, but rather the cost of enduring the alternative.
