Wichita State to Host Safety Talk After Two Reported Sexual Assaults

Two unrelated sexual assaults reported at Wichita State University within a two-week span have prompted the administration to organize a campus-wide forum on safety and support. The university announced Wednesday that it will host a community conversation on Nov. 3 to address the incidents and provide resources to students.

The first assault was reported on Oct. 11, and the second occurred on Oct. 24 at the Shocker Hall dormitories, according to reporting by the Wichita Eagle. In both instances, the university stated that a man—one 18 years old and the other 19—was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail but later released. As of Wednesday evening, online court records showed that neither individual had been formally charged with a crime.

A community conversation on Nov. 3

The university is responding to these reports with an event titled “Let’s Talk About It: A Community Conversation on Safety, Support and Respect.” The gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Beggs Ballroom inside the Rhatigan Student Center.

Jamarco Clark, the vice president for student affairs, emphasized that student safety remains the institution’s biggest priority. He encouraged any students with concerns to contact university offices directly to receive support and ensure their voices are heard.

“University officials take all of these reports seriously,” Clark said. “We want our entire campus community to feel safe and supported.”

The event is designed as a space for connection and education rather than a public testimony. In a message sent to the student body on Wednesday, the university explicitly noted that while the gathering aims to reinforce shared values and provide reporting options, no one will be expected to share personal experiences.

Community and campus organizations attend university talk

The university confirmed that representatives from several community organizations will attend the talk, including:

  • The Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center
  • The Wichita Family Crisis Center
  • The university police department
  • Various student well-being organizations

Free refreshments will be available at the Beggs Ballroom during the session.
