Willamette University Expands Bearcat Pathway to Portland Community College

Portland Community College students aiming for a four-year degree now have a direct route to Willamette University, following an agreement announced by the university to incorporate the community college into its Bearcat Pathway transfer initiative.

The newly expanded partnership, open immediately to current PCC students planning a transfer for the fall 2027 term, targets a stark disparity in American higher education. While nationwide data shows that roughly 80 percent of community college students harbor ambitions of earning a bachelor’s degree, only 16 percent manage to secure one within six years of starting their post-secondary education.

By streamlining credit transfers, offering financial aid opportunities, and providing comprehensive academic advising from day one, Willamette aims to eliminate the friction points that derail many transfer journeys. These hurdles—ranging from credit transfer complexities to unfamiliarity with university systems—have historically locked talented students out of private university completion.

Building on Oregon Community College Partnerships

The latest expansion with PCC marks the ongoing scaling of an initiative launched two years ago. Willamette established the Bearcat Pathway framework with Chemeketa Community College in 2024, followed by a similar agreement with Clackamas Community College in 2025.

For students who enter post-secondary education unsure of their academic major, hesitant to jump straight into a university environment, or simply testing whether college is right for them before continuing on their journey to a bachelor’s degree, the structured pathway offers a predictable middle ground. Bridget Jones, PCC’s dean of enrollment management, noted that simplifying the transition helps students use their community college momentum toward their educational and career goals.

“This partnership with Willamette University gives PCC students another clear pathway to completing a bachelor’s degree. By simplifying the transfer process, we’re helping students build on their success at PCC and confidently take the next step toward their educational and career goals,” Jones said.

Willamette Promotes Transparent Application Processes for Transfer Students

Willamette’s admissions leadership positions the pathway as a way to champion transparent application processes and supporting access for all students in higher education, emphasizing that transfer cohorts bring crucial diversity of experience to campus discussion rooms.

“We want students who know that Willamette is the right fit for them to have a clear understanding of how to get here, and provide the support they need along the way,” said Sue Corner, Willamette University’s dean of undergraduate admissions. “Transfer students bring a unique perspective with them and a rich set of experiences that add tremendous value to our academic community.”

As the Bearcat Pathway absorbs Portland Community College’s student body into its planning framework, the focus turns to how effectively institutional advising can close the persistent six-year degree completion gap.
