The Montana State University Billings volleyball team arrived at Sam Carver Gym in Bellingham, Washington, on Saturday with a clear objective. For a brief, promising stretch, the Yellowjackets looked like the team they aspired to be, dominating the opening set with clinical precision. However, the momentum proved fleeting. Despite an early lead, MSUB ultimately fell to Western Washington in four sets, as the Vikings mounted a steady, systematic comeback to secure the victory.
The match unfolded in a distinct pattern of reversal. MSUB controlled the tempo in the first frame, limiting Western Washington’s offensive opportunities while maintaining a high level of efficiency on their own side of the net. The Yellowjackets closed that set with a convincing 25-15 win. The team’s ability to limit opponent production while finding their own rhythm was the catalyst for that early advantage.
A Shift in Momentum at Sam Carver Gym
The tide turned abruptly in the second set. Western Washington recalibrated its offense, forcing the Yellowjackets to play from behind. While MSUB stayed within striking distance for the early stages of the frame, the Vikings gradually widened the gap, evening the match with a 25-17 set win. From that point forward, the offensive execution for MSUB struggled to find the same fluidity that defined the opening set.
The third and fourth sets followed a difficult trajectory for the visitors. MSUB finished the third set with a -.080 hitting percentage, managing only four kills against six attack errors. The final set mirrored these struggles, as the team recorded six kills but conceded nine errors, ending with a -.063 hitting percentage. By contrast, Western Washington maintained a consistent offensive output, finishing the match with 51 total kills and a .178 hitting percentage.
Head coach Scott Keister noted the defensive effort as a bright spot in an otherwise taxing afternoon.
Great blocking tonight from our team. We have been putting a lot of work into it so it’s great to see improvement. It was also great to see their response from a bad Thursday outing.
Statistical Realities of the GNAC Matchup
The discrepancy in offensive efficiency was the primary driver of the final score. While MSUB recorded 10 service aces and held a slight edge in total blocks—20 to 17—the team’s 28 kills on 134 attacks resulted in a .045 hitting percentage for the match. The Vikings, meanwhile, capitalized on their volume, securing 51 kills and holding a 74-59 advantage in digs.
Individually, several players provided high-level contributions despite the final outcome. Addyson Quandt delivered a remarkably efficient performance, recording six kills on 12 attacks with zero errors for a .500 hitting percentage. On the defensive side, Adrienne Magdaleno anchored the back row with a career-high 20 digs, while Laina Whitney contributed significantly at the net, recording six block assists and two solo blocks.
The loss brings the Yellowjackets’ record to 5-21 overall and 1-15 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
