Maynard was appointed in August last year when York’s owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla sacked Adam Hinshelwood, who had led them to second place in 2024-25 and had the team unbeaten from their first five games. However, the decision was ultimately vindicated last season as Maynard guided the club to the National League title with 108 points and ended their 10-year EFL exile. They won the division with a dramatic last-minute equaliser at Rochdale – who would have taken the sole automatic promotion spot instead.

York quickly moved to install 54-year-old Scott Lindsey as the new head coach. Lindsey arrives with a vast wealth of experience working across the EFL, having previously managed Swindon Town, MK Dons, and Chatham Town before taking Crawley up to League One in his first spell in charge in 2024.

His managerial career includes leading Crawley to promotion into League One in 2024. However, his second spell was brought to an end in March after a 10-game winless run in League Two left them one point above the relegation zone.

While the managerial office sees a high-profile swap, stability remains within the coaching staff. He will be assisted by Joao Alves, while Gary Elphick, who worked under both Hinshelwood and Maynard, will stay on as first team coach.

York City will look to settle under Lindsey’s leadership ahead of their League Two campaign, which starts the League Two season with a home game against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, 15 August.
