2026 SEC Cross Country Championships: Texas A&M Aggies Set to Compete

Texas A&M cross country athletes are heading to Columbia, Missouri, for the 2026 SEC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 30, led by a men’s squad featuring a new school record holder. The meet at Gans Creek Cross Country Course marks the start of the postseason for the Aggies, who are looking to maintain a fourth-consecutive season of finishing inside the conference top 10 for both the men’s and women’s programs, 12th Man reported.

The stakes are immediate. For the men, the goal is to climb from their preseason poll ranking of eighth. For the women, who were picked to finish 10th, the challenge is steeper, as they face a field of 16 teams that includes five nationally ranked programs in the top 30, headlined by the No. 4 Florida Gators.

Moiben and Johnston bring momentum to Gans Creek

The Aggie men enter the championships with significant momentum following the Arturo Barrios Invitational. Michael Moiben, making his collegiate cross country debut, delivered a standout performance by finishing second and breaking the Texas A&M 8K school record with a time of 22:51.2. He was followed by Jack Johnston, who took seventh place in 23:09.0.

This duo has already established themselves as the primary threats for the Maroon & White this season. Both athletes have been recognized as SEC Men’s Runner of the Week, with Johnston earning the honor on Sept. 8 and Moiben on Oct. 20. Their current form represents a significant leap from last year’s championships in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Johnston led the team with a 20th-place finish (23:52.72), earning All-SEC Third Team honors.

The men’s 8K race is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Friday. They will compete against 14 teams, four of which are ranked in the national top 30, including three that sit within the top 10.

Cherono and Barnes anchor the women’s 6K

On the women’s side, the focus shifts to Debora Cherono and Laney Barnes. At the Arturo Barrios Invitational, Cherono led the team with a 22nd-place finish in 19:56.8, while Barnes followed in 25th at 19:59.9. These times suggest a competitive edge as they prepare for the 6K race starting at 10:08 a.m.

The emergence of Barnes has been a highlight of the early season. Her SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week honor on Sept. 15 contributed to a rare milestone: Texas A&M secured three conference weekly awards in a single season for the first time since 2021. Cherono brings stability to the group, having previously earned All-SEC Third Team honors with a 17th-place finish (20:31.36) at last year’s conference meet.

While the preseason polls placed the women at 10th, the internal goal is to replicate the sixth-place team finish they achieved last season. Success in Missouri is the first hurdle in a tight window of postseason competition.

The road to Terre Haute

The SEC Championships are not the destination, but the qualifier. The performance in Columbia directly influences the trajectory toward the national stage. After the conference meet, the Aggies return to College Station to host the NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 13, at Watts Cross Country Course.

The regional meet is the final gateway. Only those who perform at the top of the South Central region will qualify for the NCAA Championships, which take place Saturday, Nov. 21, in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Aggies are chasing more than just a trophy in Columbia; they are fighting to prove that their preseason rankings were an underestimate of a squad that now holds a new school record.
