Gabriel Jesus has officially completed a transfer to Barcelona from Arsenal on a three-year contract, wearing the number nine shirt. Following the announcement, Brazil legend Neymar welcomed his compatriot to Catalonia via social media with a short message, as Hansi Flick’s side targets a third consecutive La Liga title.

The 29-year-old Brazilian striker signed a contract running until June 2029 and was unveiled in front of the media on transfer deadline day in Catalonia’s capital.

The move comes after a challenging period in North London. Jesus spent four seasons at Arsenal after joining from Manchester City in the summer of 2022. Jesus arrived at Arsenal as a four-time Premier League winner with Manchester City, having scored 58 goals in 159 appearances in the competition. However, he struggled to replicate his performances at City during his time in North London, scoring 32 goals in 123 appearances across all competitions, including three goals during the Gunners’ Premier League-winning campaign. Jesus subsequently fell down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta before completing what has been described as a dream move to Barcelona.

Barcelona pursued alternative attacking targets before focusing squarely on Jesus. After coming up short in their pursuit of first-choice striker target Julián Alvarez, the Camp Nou brass over recent days turned their focus firmly towards a deal for Jesus. The Argentine decided to remain at Atletico Madrid. The Catalans pushed hard to sign Julian Alvarez and weighed up other options, including Harry Kane, Lautaro Martinez and Joao Pedro. In the end, they settled on the 29-year-old Brazilian striker, reaching an agreement on the terms of a cut-price transfer, with the reported fee at £10 million.

The current Santos attacker’s most prolific campaign at the Camp Nou came in 2014-15, when Barca won their second continental treble with Neymar contributing 39 goals and 10 assists in 51 games across competitions. Neymar scored 22 times in La Liga, 10 times in the UEFA Champions League and seven times in the Copa del Rey that campaign as Luis Enrique’s side won all three competitions. The Brazilian left the Camp Nou in the summer of 2017 on a reported record €222 million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, where he scored 118 times across six seasons, before moving to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and subsequently returning to his old club Santos in 2025. Most recently, the Barcelona legend was in action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, scoring once in two games for a Brazil side that lost 2-1 to Norway in the Round of 16 before announcing his international retirement.
