Aaron Flint holds narrow lead over Sam Forstag in Montana race

Aaron Flint holds a slim lead as Montana’s first congressional district reports early votes

Republican Aaron Flint holds a narrow lead in Montana’s first congressional district as the first wave of election results trickles in following the close of polls at 8 p.m., Daily Montanan reported. With approximately 48,000 votes processed by 9 p.m., Flint maintained a margin of roughly 2,000 votes over Democrat Sam Forstag.

The race is currently defined by sharp geographic divides. Flint found significant strength in the Bitterroot Valley, where he secured a 16-point margin. Conversely, Forstag performed strongly in the union-heavy Silver Bow County, earning twice as many votes there as his opponent. However, the most critical data points remain outstanding, as the district’s most populous counties—Missoula, Gallatin, and Flathead—have not yet reported any votes.

This election marks a significant transition for the seat. The district was created following the 2020 census, and this is only the third time it has gone to the polls. The incumbent, Republican Representative Ryan Zinke, previously held the seat with margins of 3% and 8% in the last two cycles, but his retirement has left the position open.

The candidates offer contrasting backgrounds and political styles

The two contenders represent very different paths to the political arena. Flint, a veteran and former talk radio host, entered the race as a well-known figure among the Republican base. His long tenure hosting a conservative talk show out of Billings provided him with a built-in platform, a momentum he bolstered through recent visits from President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Forstag, a political newcomer, built his campaign on a different foundation. He has worked as a wildland firefighter and smokejumper and spent two legislative sessions serving as a lobbyist in Helena. His Democratic primary victory was driven by progressive messaging and high-profile endorsements from U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.

As the night progresses, the atmosphere remains charged in both camps. Forstag, speaking to supporters just before the polls closed, expressed a sense of hope despite the early deficit. “I’m feeling that special kind of optimism,” Forstag said. “I’m feeling like we can change this country again.” While Forstag’s supporters gathered for an election watch party at Missoula’s Florence Hotel, Flint’s campaign remained centered in the Flathead Valley.

The ultimate outcome likely hinges on the uncounted tallies from the major population centers. In Montana, the tension between the conservative-leaning Flathead Valley and the more progressive Missoula often dictates the direction of statewide and federal contests. If the early trends in the Bitterroot Valley and Silver Bow County hold, the final margin will be decided by how the urban and suburban voters in Gallatin and Missoula break.

The Secretary of State’s office continues to process ballots as results arrive from various counties across the state. For more information on official election results and voting procedures, voters can visit the Montana Secretary of State’s official website.
