An active-duty U.S. Coast Guardsman assigned to the Pay and Personnel Center in Topeka has been sentenced to prison after altering retiree account passwords to redirect missing paycheck deposits into his own personal bank account, WIBW reported.
Password Changes and Bank Account Diversions
Larry Dennis Beasley Jr. was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas. Assigned to the Pay and Personnel Center, or PPC, Beasley operated within a division that handles personnel compensation services and maintains essential human resource records for the service.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a federal audit revealed that Beasley altered the account passwords of several military retirees who had previously reported missing paychecks. He executed these changes without authorization, funneling the funds directly toward his personal finances. Federal investigators documented that Beasley attempted to redirect a total of $121,699. Authorities managed to recover $69,086 of that sum.
Beasley pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud. U.S. District Court proceedings resulted in a sentence of 12 months and a day in federal prison. Under the terms of his plea agreement, Beasley is also required to pay outstanding restitution totaling $52,613.
The Breach of Military Trust
The case was investigated by the U.S. Coast Guard Office of Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Lindsey Debenham handling the prosecution.
In the military, I learned that service members often must rely on one another without hesitation. The defendant in this case violated that fundamental trust and exploited his position to steal from others who took an oath to serve their country and their families.
